aftermarket navigation

Does anyone have an aftermarket navigation in their car? I want one one of these eclipse:

http://www.eclipse-web.com/us/avn/avn726eoverviews.html

According to crutchfield it will not work. I was wondering if someone has taken out the piece below the radio and made of these work? I want a full screen model not one of those that have the screen flip out.

YES, I run the older 5500 AVN Eclipse DoubleDin.

just pull the sunglass holder out and install!

I got mine wayyy back in the day for wayy too much but yes they will fit with a custom made bezel

Crutchfield does not sell the custom bezel or the harness to plug it in, thats why their site says it wont work on your car , but most of us used the VW harness to install.

I have the Kenwood 9140 DX installed in my 2000 CLK replacing the factory COMAND system. I went in the same spot and did not require anything but a slight trim of the filler plate that came with the unit from the factory.

I also installed the PAC interface that allows use of the SW controls. Like the factory system it requires you to be on the audio page to adjust the stations (seek/scan) but the volume controls work at all times. The only shortcoming I find is that the phone buttons no longer control the radio but the screen that comes up when making a call have large buttons on the touchscreen and are well within reach.

The iPod interface and Bluetooth are very good and the Garmin Nav is about 100X better than the factory Nav system.

I think you will be pleased if you go this way. You may have to have the system reprogrammed at the dealer if you have a factory COMAND system or you won't be able to set the clock.

Good luck!

I have owned Kenwood's all my life. I would be interested in seeing a picture of your's installed. Send me a pm when you have it up. Thanks.

The Crutchfield part number for the wiring harness adapter is 120701784. It's free if you buy your headunit from them, or $12 if purchased separately. This is the link.

If they left the old stereo in place, what did they install?

In answer to your question, the shop is mistaken. In additon to being able to change head units, you can also either keep the Bose amps and speakers or replace them, and retain the steering wheel controls.

On a non-COMAND cars, all you will loose is the ability to see the radio station or the CD number in the dash.

They put an alpine single DIN head unit, all aftermarket amps etc. This was done in '02. What is COMAND???

edited to add: I would love to put an aftermarket nav unit in..

COMAND is the Mercedes factory nav system. This is an Alpine head unit install. The Bose amps were used, the factory wiring harness wasn't cut, and the steering wheel controls still work.

Very nice.

Come to Arlington, VA and put one in for me. Just kidding. I do want something in mine but still don't feel confident enough to do it as wiring and such is my weakness and am too cheap to pay a shop to do it.

Too bad you're not in So Cal. It could be installed in under two hours. A double DIN is just as easy.

WHOA WHOA! So you were able to maintain your steering wheel controls over volume with an alpine head unit with those PAC add ons? Thanks for the info, I have been searching far and wide for this information.

The steering wheel controls work for volume, radio station selection (changing to the next or previous preset), and iPod/iPhone music selection (selecting the next or previous song). The PAC boxes are inexpensive as well.

This is the install overview.

Hi i am new to this forum...i would like to put a double din nav in my 98'. i have installed stereos before in audis so i am familiar (somewhat) with the process..along with the unit itself, which wiring harness, etc. should i buy? also, is there a mounting bracket to make it fit snug and flush or is it a good fit without? crutchfield is NO help with the clk, yet just about every other car i've had they've been great.
