turning off traction control
Hey guys, just wondering if there was a way to defeat the traction control on a 99 320. If you hit the ASR button, the triangle lights up but doesn't change anything. Any thoughts would help....thanks

if you're talking about nothing changing on a straight launch, you're right. Nothing will change because a stock 320 does not have enough power to get wheelspin from a dead stop even without traction control. However, if you have traction control off and go around a corner at a speed where ASR would normally kick in, you will slide out or drift.

I had the same problem/question on my 99 clk320 too. The asr would kick in and really screw up my launch. People said just click the "asr off" button and you can burn rubber, but that wasn't the case. Finally, one day I had the console partially apart and I must've pushed a wire or something, because now the asr off switch works. The abs still works (good thing imo). Now if I can just get it to stay off forever and get rid of that yellow triangle....
I read a post by someone somewhere to ground pin 6 on the 38 pin diagnostic connector to get kill asr (pin 1 is ground, so jump 6 to 1). Then insulate pin 29 on the ABS/ASR [N30/1] module to kill the triangle. My problem is that I'm not sure if this applies to my car or not. Maybe connecting those those pins on our cars will smoke the computer? I say give it a try an post the results.
Plus, I don't know where the ABS/ASR [N30/1] module is located or what it looks like.
King320, I think you need a tuneup! Even with fatter high traction tires I can still spin enough to activate asr.

killing it off perminitly is a bad bad idea... it may be better off to just turn it off whenever u don't want it... cause for me... there's a few times that it actually kicked in saving me from like a 360 spin.... specially in the rain...

Since I had no date tonight, and the asr thing was on my mind, I went out and played with it.
My only goal was to get that #*@in yellow light out. There were two connectors on the ASR module, only one had an active pin 29.
I pulled the wire out, but alas, the triangle mocked me as it bathed me in its bright light. Glaring at me with that one eye, that evil eye…

Chevota, did you figure out how you defeated (or enabled) the ASR switch or is it still a luck thing? Mine too has enough in it to light up that evil triangle. I'm not too worried about permanatly disabling the ASR. I've grown up with Mustangs and Vettes and miss hangin' a tail once and a while. I know its no vette but I do love the car, its out of warranty and time to really enjoy it.

There has been a lot of talk on puitting our cars in "dynometer testing" mode through the instrument cluster. This will completly disable the ESP/ABS/BAS.
Do a search on "dyno mode." Some people can do it, and some people can't. I think 2000+ cars can.
Other people just unplug the ESP module itself and plug it back in when they are done doing whatever it is they are doing.

I have a factory "ASR Off" switch that disbles it, but no permenent disable if that's what you mean.
As far as the light, I'll need to pull each wire on the ASR module one by one, or tear the dash out to get that ******* directly.
No dyno mode for me, I owe my front end and low insurance to anti-lock brakes. In fact I used 'em twice today, it never ceases to amaze me how well this car stops.
