Can the car Beep when locked?
Misleading title, probably, sorry.
On all our (other) cars, when you lock the car with the keyfob it beeps once to confirm that it is locked.
On the MB, it flashes 3 times.
Are there any secret settings that can be changed to get it to beep also?

I have heard that setting the country code to "Netherlands" will enable the beep. I have never done this - just heard other mention it. This requires using MBZ's Xentry/SDS.

I believe the dealer can do this, I wanted to have it done to my w203 and my SA told me he can do it the next time I bring the car in. I have an appointment tomorrow to have a few little things fixed on my w209 and ask them if they can put it to the setting were it beeps. I will let you know what they say.

My friend has STAR diagnostics and enabled the beeping for me by setting the Regional setting to Netherlands.
Beeps once on open, beeps three times on lock.
You can also increase the volume. I think stock is 30%, mine is increased to 80%. This volume also increases the panic alarm.

So I went to drop off the car early today and I asked my SA if she could change the settings to make it beep (this is a different SA then the one I talked to earlier who said he could do it). When I asked her she looked at me like I was crazy and said it is not possible because it was too old. I told her how I know it is possible to do and she said she would look into it. I just got a call from her and she said that its a $80 fee just for them to find out if it is possible to do and if they find out it is possible to do It will cost an additional fee to actually do it. Another thing I was there for was because there was a dead month stuck in my tail light since the day I bought the car from a MB dealership, she said there is a $200 fee to get that out. Also the mirror cover in my sun visor wouldn't stay closed which I figured would be covered under warranty, but she said another $100 for that. so were at somewhere around $400 to get a dead moth out, make my car beep, and put on a $2 part on. Guess they don't call it the stealer ship for nothing. The part that irritated me the most was how ridiculously rude the SA was to me. She kept just talking so rudely to me and just had the worst attitude towards me. MB of Pleasanton just completely lost my business.

The later model years do beep. I'm not sure when it was implemented. My 2007 does, and I know it didn't on 2004's, and I don't recall it on the 2005's, so maybe it was 2006?

My 2004 CLK320 makes 3 beeps when I lock the car and 1 beep when unlocking. I like the beeps, the volume is just right so kinda discrete.
There was no beep when I bought the car new (Canadian model). The dealership enabled this feature for me a few years ago.

Still occasionally mulling this one over, but haven't been back to the dealer and don't want to make a special trip.
I was reading on another thread about the installation of the SmartTop unit, and on the last page of the instructions there is s Step to "activate the horn for the Chirp function".
Now, I don't have the SmartTop, and am happy to just push the button inside, but I was reading the instructions anyway, just to see how hard a job it would be.
In this step, all you simply do is move a fuse in the engine fuseblock. Normal fuse holders have space for two fuse blades, but the holder for fuse 43 has 3, a left, center and right. OEM supply is installed in 43A (left and center), whereas this instruction tells you to move to 43B (center and right).
So I did this anyway, in the hope that it would be a magic solution to the beep, but naturally didn't work.
I assume that it must be something in the SmartTop that allows it to work?
Is a wiring diagram available that would show what 43A and 43B feeds?
Everything else seems to work just fine in 43B.

Probably won't help much, but my dad's clk went through a phase of random light blinking when the car was locked, which I found to be a faulty alarm unit after looking here. We ordered a new one and installed it and afterwards the car had the beeps.

I remember reading about that 43a/b setting when I installed the SmartTop in my car. Mine already beeps when locking and unlocking, so I didn't bother with it, but I'll see if I can figure out what it does if I have time to tinker with it in the morning.

Even with the SmartTop, changing fuse 43 from position "a" to "b" on my CLK does nothing, but I suspect it's because my car is already coded to use the ATA signal siren to "beep" (this was standard as of a build date of June 1, 2006 - i.e. MY2007 and later).
Fuse 43 is for the fanfare horn (i.e. vehicle horn, not the ATA siren). I believe the two positions control whether the horn circuit has power with the ignition on or not. In position "a", the circuit only has power with the ignition on, but in position "b", it has power even with the ignition off. I believe the SmartTop sends a CAN bus signal to activate the horn when locking/unlocking, but since the ignition is off, this can only work if fuse 43 is in the B position. If the vehicle is coded to use the ATA siren (as mine is), this has no effect.
I have heard that if you use SDS to code the car for "Netherlands" nationality, all other things will work properly as they do in the USA, but the ATA siren will be activated. Of course that means either buying your own copy of SDS (which I highly recommend for skilled and dedicated DIYers) or paying a dealer to do it (if they even will - some won't perform undocumented coding like that).
If you have a cabriolet, I highly recommend the SmartTop. It makes using the soft top so much better - no more worrying if you have the requisite 23 seconds at the next traffic light, or sitting still in the car holding the button. Also, you get to use the fog lights as DRLs and you get the lock/unlock beep on pre-MY2007's.
