Question SOS Malfunction CLK320

Hello, I own a 2005 CLK320 Convertible. The other day, at night, I accidentally hit the overhead SOS button while looking for the map light. Now every time I start the car I get a malfunction warning about Tele Aid and to take my car to the nearest MB dealer. I have never subscribed to Tele Aid and have never, ever hooked up a phone to use with the vehicle. I don't even know if I have a W208 or W209 vehicle. One suggestion was to hook up a phone to the car and the message will probably clear itself. Is there any way of clearing the message without hooking up a phone? Thanks in advance.

Do you have the radio code? If so, disconnect the battery and leave the lights on to fully discharge the power. Wait 10 minutes. Reconnect battery. But you'll have to reprogram all user settings. The code should go away. That reboots the computer. Your car is a w209 with a M112 engine.

No I don't know the radio code. I never hooked up a phone to the car. I looked through all my paper work and did not find a radio code. Disconnecting the battery makes sense and I am willing to try it. I am not concerned about my user settings especially if your idea works. (If I decide to hook up a phone in the future do I need a code and if so is this a dealer only item?) Thanks a million!!!

There is no radio code needed. but disconnecting the battery may or may not clear the Teleaid error depending on what it it. It's not the fact that you pressed the button that caused the error - pressing the button tried to call out, which also does a system check, and something failed. A common point of failure is a bad secondary antenna connection int he rear bumper (especially if the car has been in an accident).

Very good info. Disconnecting the battery did not change a thing. I still get the same error message about Tele Aid and to take the car into the shop. I also get "1 Malfunction" with no indication as to the cause, but the car drives perfectly fine and everything seems to work fine. (I am assuming the 1 Malfunction indication is the Tele Aid malfunction) There are no dashboard lights lit. The only accident was a fender bender over the right front wheel which was repaired a long time ago. Thanks for your help.

Do you have an ODBII code reader? It's a good investment. Anyway, your neighborhood auto parts store like Autozone etc may let you borrow one. No guarantees but code readers probably will allow you to clear the error code. It may come back again but it's worth the try. My code reader has cleared every code I've ever had but they're not MB specific codes and were generic engine codes. These are cheap (<$80) and well worth the hassle.

Just so happens I own a OBD2 reader. I hooked it up and no error codes were displayed. There are 3 lights on the front of the reader. Green (OK), Yellow (Pending Problems) and Red (Failure). Only the yellow light was lit with no error codes displayed. I have been using this OBD2 reader for many years now on several different vehicles and know how to use it. Thanks for the suggestion. I guess I will have to take it to a dealer or just continue to ignore the malfunction. My biggest fear is that the dealer might charge me for a malfunction that can't be fixed. Oh Well....

Generic OBDII scanners won't read anything but ECU errors (and a few TCU errors that MBZ was nice enough to cross-walk over to the ECU). The advanced systems like ESP, SRS, TeleAid, etc. require specialized equipment compatible with MBZ communication protocols. Of course Star Diagnosis (SDS) that the dealers use will do it all, and you can get your own "cloned" copy for about $500, or, you can buy some aftermarket hand held scanners that read MBZ systems. Beyond that, it sounds like a trip to the dealer may be the least expensive way to get a diagnosis.

That only reads generic OBDII codes from the ECU. It will do no good to diagnose TeleAid, SRS, EPS, etc.

Thanks for your help. I have another question. My 2005 CLK320 has never had a phone hooked up to it. Now my wife wants to use her smartphone in the car. A friend of mine said something about the phone in the car might be analog and needs to be converted to digital to use with a smartphone? He told me that might be the reason for the malfunction message related to Tele Aid. Also does anyone know if the cars phone is Bluetooth capable? Thanks in advance.

The cell phone interface and TeleAid are totally unrelated. Unless you car has the phone dock in the center console, you don't have what it takes to pair the phone. The OEM parts for this are about $1K. I found a better solution - see here:
