K & N vs Green vs BMC
Ok - I'm sure I'm not the first to ask this and I'm sure I won't be the last - which is best or what does everyone fit - not done any other mods as yet but will do an ECU remap/chip and may put higher flow cats on at some point.
Everywhere I look I get another opinion - I know that they only give a tiny bit more BHP - was looking to get a few more MPG out as I run mostly in town and nicer sounds??

K&N: ppl say they are over lubricated leads to faulty MAS.
Green: Possible the frame deforms due to heat and lets in all that nice dirt
BMC: dunno, not enough user feedback
REally doesn't matter, alot of ppl will also swear by paper filters. Not worth the dmg to your engine for the 1 hp add.
Im just repeating what i've read. I use green filters myself. If your unsure stay with paper, cleaning aftermarket filters is a chore, popping in a new paper filter is soooo easy and cheap.

I just buy new k&n filters every 30,000. it's when people try and re-oil themselves that you get into trouble with putting too much on. I think some other folks mb have said the same thing. I've used K&n's for almost 20 years on various cars and never have had an issue.

I've ran K&Ns on my CLK430 and my CLK55 and never had any issues with MAF or anything else. They definitely help on the fwy when you are passing a car. The 5.4L engine needs to breathe.

Ok - thanks guys - will think on this K and N's seem well priced and easy to get and I've run them in many cars - so I may go that route
Can anyone point me towards the sticky or "how to" to remove them - sorry I know its a pretty basic one but these are not cars you need to experiment on and I would rather get it right first time!!!
Did I see it on the 208 Section?????

I've used K&N for years and years but the reality of a gauze filter is that it just doesn't filter as well as other mediums. Another member mentioned that it's not worth the extra 1hp, I (now after years) agree. I'm sure interested in trying out the Green filters though.

ML320, Looking for my S4
BMC is the way to go for power. Currently I use a paper filter simply because of its superior filtration compared to cotton/foam filters.

I currently use the green filters that came with my Renntech airbox V3. So far I have had zero issues and been very happy with it's quality. I know they had issues a while back but from my understanding the problems were resolved. Has anyone experienced any sort of issue recently? I've also tried BMC (didn't like the fitment for my RT airbox) and K&N, green filters got my vote and I will continue to run them.

The 55 box is easy. Pull up on the front first, to remove the part of the cover with the star. It just pops off. Then grab the box towards the rear and pull up and forward. It also just pops off. Turn it over and you see the torx screws holding it together. Remove all those and the filters are inside. Make sure to line up the MAF seal at the back when you re-install. A little lube on the seal will make it fall into place easily.

Finally tried to order both Green's and BMC's and no one had them (duh just before Xmas isn't the best time to order them) so I went for K and N's
Simple - pull the front air/snorkels out - Pull off main cover - sort of two bits - the front section clips into the first - not very heavy just tricky to pull upwards and out
11 x 25 torx screws and the back comes open - bit like a crab shell - Big AMG filters very deep and quite clean as the were replaced only 3000 miles ago but underneath quite a bit of small leaves/dust crud.
AMG filters very thick ish 1 1/2" and K and N's much thinner maybe 1/2" much less oily/waxy than I remember them being when I have replaced on previous cars (no more MAF filter queries then)
Good fit - nice and tight

Out on the road - I can't see these are any worse than the original and as I have mentioned far less oily than I remember on older ones (???![crazy](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/crazy.gif)
![crazy](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/crazy.gif)
)
Sounds - got a bit more growl and deeper rumble![naughty](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/naughty.gif)

Any better - seems a bit more grunt but almost smoother (possible placebo effect???) - can't see how it would produce less bhp - worth the money probably not but what the hell else was I going to do before going back to work![rolf](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/rofl.gif)

I have been using K&N on my SLK for 10 years and they are in perfect condition.
I clean them every year and follow the instructions properly when oiling them.
Stay away from the green filters !!!! I used them before the K&N for about 3 months until their moulding deteriorated and thankfully got caught by a mesh on the intake. These green filters are the worse enemy for your engine.
I have read comments about the BMC filters having the same issue with the foam moulding falling apart and I will not take a chance with these since I compared them with the green filters and noticed that the moulding material is basically the same just with different color.
