Opinions 2008 Porsche GT2

I found a fully optioned 2008 Porsche GT2 with 252 original miles today for $169K. I think Porsche's hold their value over time much better than most cars and was wondering if I should look a little closer?

Have you driven one of these GT 2's before? Guessing this is the 997 bodystyle correct? I agree about their value's holding better than others.

I think you should take it for a spin! Should help you decide better.

You are thinking about buying a $169k Porsche and you are worried about your valve caps sticking to your TPMS?!

i dont see a problem with that....the time it takes ti fix those valve stems is the issue, not the cost

Sold - CLK500
there is a reason why when you pass by any porsche dealer you will see the odd gt3! people buy them thinking they can use them daily or even just for a few days a week but cant bare the cars harsh ride after a few hours of driving it at a time.

i think a 997 turbo with a set of bilstein coilovers is the best choice from the 997 range at least for day to day use.

the real question is whats the purpose of the purchase? weekend toy or daily driver

Turbos are going for 85k these days! save your money and get a TT

You're right it's not the $$$, it's the 4-5 hours and the hassle I've spent getting this resolved!

Good point, it would not be a daily driver. I'm just looking for a new toy. I fondly remember my 89 944 Turbo and my 87 930 Turbo. They were great cars and I was just wondering if the newer P-cars would be as much fun as the older less sophisticated 80's P-cars.

P cars are great cars but i woudlnt suggest a GT2 as a daily driver, but excellent as a toy. They do tend to keep their value eventhough they are a dime a dozen in my area. Either way I hope you enjoy it in good health should you decide to purchase.

Consider a Ford GT in this price range. They hold their values solid like a rock. Excellent performance as well.

Disconnect the front drive, add maybe 15k in tuning & parts and voila!
A nearly GT2 that's a dd.

As long as the warranty is intact, it's not an issue. Still, you may want to Google M96 IMS failure.

LN Engineering has a good write up.

2008 GT2's are of the 997 variant... fast car and can be made much faster.

If you are interested in the 997 GT2, you should also look into the 997.1 GT3, 997.1 GT3 RS, and the 997.2 GT3. The 997.2 GT3 RS is also starting to be delivered to customers now.

I had a 997.1 GT3 and that is the only car that I still miss sometimes. The ride is not any harsher than the BS.

The 996GT2 tanked in resale but it was a handful to drive. Like others have said the 997tt would be a more useable car. If it were me I's take a Ford GT hands down.
In the end what are you going to do with the car. It takes a very good club driver to extract the performance porsche advertises out of a GT2.

A good friend that has owned many exotics hated his FGT. He said it was the most impractical car he has ever owned and he couldn't take it anywhere. There are extremely wide and nice easy to park, etc.

997 GT3RS is amazing for a track toy. 997TT for daily and fun can't be beat.

Sounds like you're leaning towards another weekend toy rather than a serious track car. GT2's are like GT3/RS's, built for the track. Unlike the GT3's, GT2's have torque, tons of it, which means they are not that easy to drive..........in corners that is. Not really evil handling, but night and day to a regular turbo. Think of it as a BS, but instead of having linear power delivery with a subtle braking away in the rear, the 996 GT2 when boost comes on is a handful and requires quick reflexes. Not a relaxed drive, if that's what you're looking for. What I've heard, 997 GT2's are better handling, but a far cry from a 997 TT. In regards to resale value, good luck.............my guess: They'll tank just like the predecessor. I was just offered a 2010 GT3 with 600 miles for 100K. Original MSRP was 133K.

I had a GT3 (and contrary to most posts in this thread drove it every day). It was wonderful - modified with Motons, roll cage, etc. I thought the GT2 would be an improvement - so I bought one. Sadly, it wasn't. The power is so non-linear, and it is far less balanced than the GT3. I sold it and bought another GT3RS and am much happier. I drive my BS as my commute car which also works out better...

Thanks everyone for your opinions which vary quite a bit. But, that's what I was asking for! I'm going to re-think my P-car options and review the Ford GT as an alternative.

CLK AMG BLACK SERIES (among other German things)
Sorry to buck the trend but in my experience of track driving the gt2 and fgt the gt2 was noticeably faster and much more exciting to drive . Few things can match the ferocity of a 997 gt2 and fewer can take the consistent abuse . It is also hugely tunable which may or may not be of relevance . I will agree though that the Ford is much easier to drive but some may prefer the challenge of mastering the gt2 . No doubt the Ford wins the looks / attention battle .

I am also somewhat biased as I do most of my track driving in Porsches .

Id go Porsche 997 gt2 all day long

Ford GT it is!! The only downside is that the doors have be be opened up really wide because of the overhang, other than that the car is outstanding. Just park far or take up 2 parking spaces where ever you park and that will sove that problem. The performance is amazing!!

I couldn't let your comment go, I've track driven the FGT, hands down faster than a Gt3 and easier to drive. Put a roll bar in any of the sports cars and there is really no room.

My friend with the FGT has a CGT, F430, 993tt 3.8, and a GT3. His car of choice for the track is the FGT. Let's face it neither a GT2 or FGT is a very good daily driver, but you don't buy them to go to McDonalds.
