GL420 diesel - urea injection?

I'm interested in the upcoming 2008 GL420. Does anyone know if it will have the urea injection system making it 50 state compliant? I know the 320 engine doesn't have the urea injection system and MB says it will bring it out later but I wasn't certain about the 420.

The GL420 CDi may or may not be coming into NA and if and when they do they will have even more emission shjt. 3 or 4 filters not enough for you? Do you really want **** injection? Huge repair bills when the truck is worth the least? Check engine lights flashing like a Christmas tree when there is a tiny bit too much soot blowing out the exhaust pipe?

The answer is all no to me and that is why I bought a 2006 E320 CDi even when the 2007 Bluetec is only marginally dearer. No stinking tree-hugging filters for me.

I am grandfathered.

It still has two or three filters after the turbo.

Thanks for that clear response

240:

Actually there is only one solitary converter after the turbo and two mufflers under the rear bumper. No "resonators". One single large pipe splitting into 2 smaller pipes. All straight. The only emission sensor would be to this single catalytic converter.

Nothing else. For a 2006 car this is a miracle.

DOOD! The only problem is that you cannot squish 7 passengers safely into your E class car, nor can you tow a heavy trailer. Your arguement is thus invalid.

To answer the original question... My best guess is that it will indeed have the urea injection. MZB was waiting for the EPA to approve their schema for urea injection to meet emissions regulations, which has now been done.

I highly suspect that the GL420 Bluetec will indeed be a 50 state US sold vehicle.

Two pieces of information lead me to believe this...

1.) MZB debuted a GL420 Bluetec at one of the recent auto shows which included their AdBlue urea injection system.

2.) That auto show that they debuted it at.... It was Detroit.

The ONLY solution Germany Inc.--Mercedes, BMW, and VW -- currently has for making diesels 50-state USA compliant is Bluetec.

Therefore if the V8 is coming to USA and Mercedes wants it 50-state compliant, it will be Bluetec.

As will be next year's BMWs and VWs.

It's not any more complicated than that.

138 bhp, 260 Pound-Foot torque (approximately), 2.2 liter 4 cylinder, DOHC, turbocharged. It has a "double layer" catalytic converter that somehow self generates urea. There is no need for a urea tank. It is going into production in 2008 or 2009. Currently a variant of this engine is used in European Accords.

I wonder if there are bigger V-6 engines later? MB should look at this technology.

Like Honda the VW Jetta TDI Bluetec announced for the spring of 2008 also wont use urea, but a renewable lean nitrogen trap (LNT) instead, which may be sufficient for smaller displacements and lighter vehicles, but the LNT is also slightly less fuel efficient than the AdBlue SCR system. Not sure yet what MB will use in the 50 state E320 Bluetec, LNT or SCR. They have been quiet on this topic so far. The heavier SUVs and V8 diesels will likely use SCR.

Here's the other DEER 2006 paper I was looking for and didn't find in time to include in the previous reply. FORD R&D compares the efficiency of SCR and LNT on page 8 of this presentation:
