looking at an old diesel G wagen...

hopefully i can pick it up for a hell of a good deal... if it works out, what can i do to get more power out of it? can the injection pump be modified simply for more power?

A chip will net you gains, rest of the engine and trans will hold up, just don't go too crazy...think no more than 50hp 50tq...

a chip works in the old ones? i figured they were all mechanical. that would make it easy then!

You're correct--there's no "chipping" old diesels that have no computers in the first place.

This is likely to have the same engine as a 300D, probably non-turbo. You could install a turbo engine from a later 300D car pretty easily. The non-turbo 300D engine cannot have turbo added, as many modifications to the basic engine are required for turbo use.

You can still add the turbo motor.

If its an early 80's G, its non-turbo. The only way to add power, reliably, is to exchange a turbo engine and work up from there.

But even with the old non-t, it'll still be faster than the king's ride...

Anyway, if you are going to do mostly offroad I'll be worried about suspenssion, tires, and radiator. Off course if you want to do the Baja 1000, buy a thropy truck!!!
