Diesel Particulate Filter
I have a 2005 E320 CDI with the inline 6. I was curious if it has a DPF or diesel particulate filter that goes through periodic regens. If it doesn't what year did Merecedes start putting these on in the U.S ?

Thanks lkchris. What I find interesting then is how much more reliable MB's application of the DPF technology seems to be as compared to what is happening in the 3/4 ton diesel pickup market. If you spend any time on those tech forums there appears to be a litany of issues for all of the diesel makes from the big 3.

My F350 is very sophisticated and has run perfect. Zero problems. Quiet with tons of power. I can pull a 12K enclosed car hauler as fast as I want to go. I've noticed it going into regen once or twice. It's my fifth diesel and the best so far.
To me, the MB urea solution seems like a goofy stop gap.

DPF arrived with the V6 diesels in 2007.
MB 299.5 oil for your OM648

They have to stock both. Turns out (according to a recent TSB) that 5w40 ESP is no longer recommended for gas engines in the US due to increased ethanol content in fuel. Apparently the 5w40 ESP does not react with US fuel very well. Was going to try this oil in my w210 e320 until I read this, and am therefore going to stick with Mobil 1 10w40 HM, which the engine seems to be very happy with. Both diesels (cdi & bluetec) will be getting the new oil formulation...

I've got a 2008 F350 Ford. Keep in mind that there are a lot of blowhards on the diesel forums long for the good old days of smelly diesels that rattled. Also, there are huge numbers of trucks out there compared to the numbers of DPF Mercedes. I can't even guess but it's probably 2 orders of magnitude which equates to more problems.

I have also seen a window sticker mentioning Bluetec on a 2008 Dodge diesel at a dealership.

My F350 was substantially cleaner on the emissions test than my CDI.

The 2006 CDi does not need to meet the presumably 2007 + Ford Powerstroke standards. It has the regeneration feature to burn soot. I like the fire breathing exhausts of the initial trucks.

Test standards for cars and light trucks are the same in areas of Colorado that test. Obviously, the car/truck EPA/CARB standards got much tougher for the later model cars.
