Exhaust note

Yes, very easy. Go to your local exhaust shop and have them remove the large resonator and two bullet resonators, and install an x-pipe. Leave the stock mufflers and cats alone. Perfect rumble without being anywhere near loud.

They showed me under the car where the 2 bullets are and the big resonator. When you guys say "x pipe", do you mean x all the way from the bullet to back of big resonator? The shop says he thinks the bullets right in front are cats, but they're resonators right?
The exhaust shop guy suggested to either do an X where the bullets are and then straight pipe it down, OR straight pipe where the bullets and X on the resonator. Is this correct?
How much are you guys paying to get this done?

I removed the small resonators, sounds great under acceleration with no drone. Still has the refined subtle v8 rumble under light driving and is definately audible when on the gas...always brings a smile.

I went to my local exhaust shop today and asked about getting x pipe done.

The bullets are most definitely resonators. Straight pipe where they are, and x-pipe where the big resonator is. The sound is PERFECT! No drone, deep rumble while never being loud. It's how it should sound from the factory.

Thanks for your replies. I was wondering - would it sound good if I removed the big resonator and just straight piped it to the mufflers? Also what's the deal with losing back pressure if I X pipe? People say X NA and straight pipe turbos is preferred. Is that true?

I have a 2010 E550 (Naturally aspirated) Coupe and was wondering if your suggestion to remove the resonators and add an X pipe would have the same/similar sound effect without any negative performance or mechanical/electrical/sensor malfunction(s).

Resonator delete is a common mod to these cars... click here for pics of before and after...

I had read on one of these blogs that naturally aspirated engines (mine) do not necessarily have the same result as turbo engines (yours) and may even cause problems if handled the same way.

Aaahhh been waiting to see if somebody did this so they do fit.... can you give me some specifics ?
what year C63s ?
2 door or 4 door (unsure if it matters...)
Increased sound at normal throttle or just Wide Open ?
Assuming no drone...

The mufflers were from a C63s coupe not sure what year, got complete exhaust secondhand from eBay but only wanted rear mufflers.
They came with the exhaust valve actuators which because they are not connected are permanently open.
The original exhaust was cut and the AMG mufflers hanging bracket were tweaked to allow fitment along with a new bend to align old with new.
obviously not a straight swap. A good exhaust guy shouldn't have any problems.
I stupidly didn't take any pics when it was being done.
The sound is exactly what I wanted maybe 15% loader than stock with more of that glorious V8 rumble in cabin on part throttle but definitely not in the boy racer league. and no drone at all, which is also what I wanted to avoid.
I'm extremely happy with the outcome and will not be removing the resonators.
Only thing I would like to do is have the exhaust flap actuators operable with a remote for early morning start up.
for lots of relevant information search for thread - E550 convertible 2014 resonators delete +c63 performance exhaust
hope this all helps

I ended getting my resonators deleted. The shop put an x pipe where the bullets were and straight piped the big resonator. I wonder if I should have just gone straight pipe for both.
I didn't take a before video, can someone confirm it is a little louder than stock?

Got me thinking. I have resonator delete (2010 C207 with NA m273 engine) but I do get some drone around 5K rpm after I installed the headers. The drone comes from the rear side. I don't think this can be fixed by a tune (already have my ECU tuned with stage-1) so I am scratching my head now. If anyone has an idea on how the drone can be distinguished I would appreciate an insight.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Seems it might be those small bullet 'resonators' which go before mufflers, I always thought those are secondary cats. Need to take a look at the schematics to reconfirm.

We have different engines but I haven't noticed any drone yet on my car. I did read that the NA engine will sound a lot different (read: LOUD) than the TT version and an x pipe might help with sound. People do call the bullet resonators "second cats" as well. When I looked in my bullets, its mostly straight through with a bend in the middle
