I have just registered here

Since there are now forums here for all of my cars I have decided to register and participate. I've been reading posts here for a while and I'm a regular at some of the other Mercedes-Benz forums. I tried posting an image of our 1990 300TE which we have owned for almost five years but it was just too large so I will have to find a smaller one. Despite almost 175,000km it presents as very original and whilst my wife uses it as her daily driver and we both use it as our family car including transporting our kids, it usually wins its class (after a thorough clean) at our annual concours here in Sydney. It is fairly well optioned including electric seats (orthopaedic driver's seat). When I do post an image, keen observers will notice the 7" x 15" Sportline wheels with 205/60 tyres even though it is not a Sportline (don't tell the concours judges!). I will post images of my other cars on the relevant forums.

Hi Greg. Me Too

MBNZ.org will be down for a few days and I've missed the chat!

Chuppers on this forum too.

Hello those that don't know me. My names Andrew, I live in Frome in Somerset, UK.

I have a rare-ish W124. Its a 1990 300TE-24valve with factory fitted sportline option (seats, steering , suspension etc..).

It has no Catalytic converter and no weighty airbags, side impacts etc.. so does 0-60 in mid seven seconds and tops out at just a smidgen over 140mph.

Big Bad and Brown.

I didn't remove it

It never had one. Cats did not become law here in the UK until late 1993 I think.

The main reason Mercedes went to the 3.2 litre I6 was to make up for the loss of power that a CAT causes. A 3 litre M104 with no CAT has more power and less weight than a 3.2 litre M104 with one.

The difference in tuning for the US market makes even more difference. Hence a 3.2 in Europe (smaller , less restrictive CATs and higher octane fuel) produce more power than a 3.2 in US spec.

So a 3litre with no CAT on Euro four star leaded fuel pumps out nearly 240bhp against 217bhp for a 3.2 with CAT? I think thats about right but stand to be corrected.

No it doesn't smell, The smell you have got is probably sulfer fumes caused because your CAT is on its way out.

And when they go wrong.............

Here's our 300TE

I scanned the photo (taken early morning after arriving at last year's concours) again and got it down to a file size that will fit. I haven't got many of the TE and none of the interior. I'll have to take some soon.

Not as good a picture

Not as good a picture but here's a low one. See what I mean about the ground clearance on the sportline estate.

The 300E-24 without a cat puts out 231bhp, does 0-60 in 7.5secs and tops out at 150mph. I know because I once did it on the A38 outside Plympton! I sold mine and bought an E320 coupe - big mistake. The 300E-24 is a much better car.
