Transmission Flush..Good Idea??

Transmission Flush..Good Idea??

I have access to a flush machine. Any issues flushing a MB trans? If its flushed should I replace the filter? Should I measure the fluid removed and replace with the same amount. I have 10 liters on hand. Will I need more. Its a 98 320 79k...Thanks

Do not flush

follow the diy on mercedesshop.com resource diy section or benzworld.org w210 dit section.98 you have a drain plug on the torque converter,drain the pan ,drop it,clean it with cleaner,dry it with lint free wipes,install filter,drain converter fill per instructions and measure with the special dipstick,pm me if you need one.Or for more tips.
Don't flush.

Most people I know recommend the drain & refill only. With the drain plug on the torque converter, you can easily drain all the fluid, so there's no reason to flush. Honestly I couldn't say if it's a bad idea, but you might hear that the flush will "dislodge gunk that clogs a passage". My sample size is too small to validate that claim, but I think it's most applicable to trannies that have been abused and ignored in their long lifetimes.
10 quarts sounds about right, and I think you have the 722.6 electronic trans, so only use the MB overpriced fluid.

It's recommended that you'd at least drop the pan and replace filter first. That way you'll get rid of the junk at the the bottom of the pan. Without doing that, flushing will push the pan's impurity collection back into the tranny.

After dropping the pan, you can choose to flush, drain torque converter, or pump out from the cooler line (whichever method is fine). I couldn't find the TC plug so I actually pump from the cooler line. Ten liters won't be enough, if you want to do a nice job, look at about 15 liters. DIY at benzworld.org.

JeffreyP is right, if you do the flush-out method you need more fluid in order to get sufficent exchange (like a submarine snorkeling to exchange its air). But the actual capacity is 7.5-8.2 liters depending on model. Yet another reason to drain & refill.

First ...thanks for the replies. I truly appreciate all of your opinions. I have a 99 430 (61K). I did the pan drop and converter drain. I followed the DIY sticky and was quite pleased with the results. My neighbor is a Lexus Technician that has a small shop behind his house. He allows me access to his lifts. He purchased a flush machine and offered to flush the tranny for me. After a lengthy discussion he agreed that I should do the pan drop. He is not familar with MB trannys but agrees that high pressure can damage older transmissions (98 320 71K) I will be using the lift this weekend to drop the pan. Thanks again E in Ohio.......
