Harmonic Balancer M113?
Hi
I have a 2002 E55 with engine number 113.980 60 028759.
What is this harmonic balancer I hear so much about?
How can I check if I need to replace it? Is it something I can do myself? Do I need some special tools?

The harmnic balancer is only used in the M112 (V6) not the M113..
In our case with the 113 engine nt have harmonic balancer cause is a v8 at 90°, only hethe dampner pulley (crankshaft) with some ruber inside to prevent any vibration. is not a kind work to replace it.. but if you do not have an expert i recommend you go to a workshop. is very hard to unlock the center bolt & you want to replace it the crank front seal when you change your dampner

aaah
I guess it's the Vibration Absorber with part number A1130300003 you mean?
The car has about 115 000 miles on it. Does it need change? How can I check if it's going bad?

No
it does not need to be replaced.
The recalled ones were on earlier w210 v6 models.
And if you had one of those you would call the dealer and they would tell you if the recall had been performed or not. In your case you don't have the issue. Leaave it alone and get some beauty sleep.

I used to own a 1998 E430 and the dealer told me the HB had been replaced so I think both the 320 and 430 motors were subject to the same recall.

PDF Recall sayd clearly HARMONIC BALANCER "PULLEY" (Dampner) need to be replaced... the Harmonic balancer SHAFT is only used in the M112 engines (cause is an V6 to 90°) this engines need an internal centerblock balancer to prevent vibrations (some people know this by BALANCER SHAFT).. not used in the M113 cause it's not needed v8 to 90° maybe someone know about what i'm talking about

I see why the harmonic balancer is needed on the V6 and not the V8, as the total will be 2x270 and not 2x360 degrees..
210.274/210.074 wasn't in that list anyway..
Thank you for clearing this up

Hi, I have a 98 E320 (V6) with 100k miles. During a recent oil change I asked my indie about the HB. He stated that it looked as though it has never been replaced. When I asked if it should be now as a preventative measure he said that the failures were seen much earlier in the cars life. It it hadn't failed it's very unlikely now that it ever will so no need to replace. Is he right? Is this good advice? Thanks to all.

Thanks for the advice. I just called MBUSA and gave them my VIN. They said the harmonic balancer was related to a service campaign, not a recall....? Anyway, they said that for my car it had been "inspected" in 2005. I asked if the record detailed the location of where it was inspected or if it specifically stated that the HB was replaced. He said no to both questions. So, am I to assume all is well? Thanks all

azbenze, the information you asked for should be part of your VMI (vehicle master inquiry) to which MBUSA and any dealer should have ready access. I would not be satisfied with the answers you were given. Stop by or call some dealer and ask them.
