The birds advice is half correct---the VIN is used to correctly define the correct part used on your car----so tell us the complete story what part number did they suggest was correct??

THOSE THINGS ARE OUT OF CONTROL
When VIN on proper EPC should give you correct part number, there are exception, like rear brake pads on W210.
I have situation with my 4 years old MB, where all EPC show completely different exhaust than I have.
So the best course of action is read old part number (phone cameras are priceless in getting those on the car) and find exact one, or cross-reference.
For MB parts I always go to Husker https://www.mbdirectparts.com/ and they have been always very helpful on top of good pricing.

If the car has the oil cooler it is located on the inboard side of the oil filter housing. Below it the water pump housing has a spud for a hose connection to the cooler. It should be fairly easy to tell what you need.

Regarding the EPC (and dealer parts system) and water pumps, there was a problem with this very issue for some cars in the past. On my son's C43 the VIN called for the non-cooler pump. The C43 has the cooler. That was several years ago - I don't know if M-B corrected the issue.

98 E320 Water Pump

EPC comes up with part 1122001501 for my 98 even with VIN entered.
Dealer comes up with same number as do several on-line sites. That pump has 2 nozzles.
However, some 98 E320s including my car have the oil cooler. They need part 1122001401. This is the one with three nozzles.

Many vendors now seem aware of this and offer both types and say to check if you need oil cooler version before ordering.

Hoses are another problem - I can't make or tail on EPC as to which rad hoses my car needs

PS: Found that the 2002 SL500 V-8 uses the same water pump as the V-6 W210.
