Depends.

If it actually sounds like a helicopter (choppy, rhythmic, fluttering noise) then I'd have to say "No, that's not normal.", but, if instead, it sounds like a speedboat, then unfortunately, "Yes".

Refer to the following thread for additional details:

Is AUX fan supposed to be sooo noisy??

C'est la vie. Mon Dieu!!

When the A/C kicks in on full blast it does sound like a helicopter/lawnmower/leafblower. I hate it too, the easy thing to do is just manually lower the fan speed.

The noise seems to come from an auxiliary fan for the engine cooling system, not from the A/C fan itself, but I've only heard it when the A/C turns itself to max cooling. Whether the auxiliary fan is on because the A/C is on max cooling, or whether both are on because it's hot outside and both the engine and the cabin need extra cooling, I don't know.

Are you in Australia? This question usually comes up in the spring, not in the fall.

Amazingly I don’t even hear the fan in the CLS – so much different than the ’03 320. But then again temperatures have begun to fall here in Phoenix nevertheless I remember the 320’s fan always roaring. Another thing I noticed is that I have puddle lights, weren’t these dropped?

The CDI has been very quiet in the last month or so as well, I think it's the 79-85 degree highs and not the CLS.. I understand the CLS and an E500 share 95% of the same drivetrain parts, and 50% of the electrics with 10% interior parts in common.. Or so the salesman at Schumacher tells me.

Un huh, that’s what I thought. We’ll see when the temperature pick up. BTW, did the shoemaker salesman quote those exact percentages?

I stopped by shoemaker one Sunday after having brunch at the Cheesecake a few months back just to take another close up look at the CLS and a salesman sees we’re interested, closes in, goes on with his schtick (the old song and dance) then tells us that the dealers were not allowed to sell below MSRP as dictated by MBUSA. Furthermore, if they found at about any dealers who were discounting they should report it to Montvale. So my wife and I are both looking at this guy like he has three heads because we already secured invoice not to mention most southern CA dealers were offering an average of $2000 off MSRP at the time. True story!

Sounds like that salesman used to work for Rolex.. that's their policy, not MBUSA's.

As for those percentages, I have to admit, I'm recalling to my best.. and I'm willing to bet that I'm recalling 100%, but won't guarantee it. It was the tall skinny balding guy, if that helps. I asked him "is it true this is an E500 with new skin?"

there are 2 fan settings, one is low, which sounds normal. The other one sounds like a Hoover on crack. Its by far the worst, loudest and unflattering fan noise Ive heard on any car. Its normal, unfortunately.

You cant directly change the fan speed for the AC condenser. Its thermally controlled based on outside ambient temp. you might be able to get it to shut off sooner with the inside fan control, but you will sweat it out.
