I did the update at the dealership, of course it took them half an hour to understand what I'm talking about and another half an hour to do it
. and all worked fine;
but the problem now I cann't enter a destination while I'm driving, I have to bring the car to a complete stop to enter the address or POI

the update is straightforward. it takes about 10mins.

The current disc is all inclusive, and one of the steps is that it completely erases the flash memory.

The first disc was DTB P-B-82.60/382a / Service disc W211 589 11 22 00.
The second is Service disc W211 589 14 22 00.
Will the second disk include all the updates the first one does? I've read the first update fixes dvd navigation recognition errors and provides MP3 playback. I want to make sure I have those capabilities since my current dvd is 2004.1 and that when I upgrade, the dvd will be read.

The current disc can be read but its only a 2004.1. Whenever I get around to updating it, I want to make sure it can be recognized because I've read that quite a few 2004 models could not read newer DVDs.
It would be nice to have the MP3 and ETA features as well.

my I bought the 2006.1 and didnt have any trouble. But like star said any updates u upload to the comand is going to erased by the new software

All I got was a plain gray, blank screen, no map whatso ever. Even though I didn't get any errors when I installed it (it updated something during the install). Fortunately I was able to go back to the old disc w/no problems.(it also did some sort of update)
When I get around to it, I'll try the 2006.1 again and see if the service update solved the problem.

How much did it cost you to do the update at the dealership? I want to perform two service disc updates for my '04 E500 but I would rather the dealership take care of any unforseen complications (thanks konigstiger), especially since its not under warranty anymore
My car is still under warranty so they didn't charge me any thing. but make sure to take the disc number with you because they have no idea it is existed.
I like to see the ETA on the nav screen, but as I stated earlier I cann't enter a destination while I'm driving
.I wonder if the other guys have the same issue.

I did this update a couple of weeks ago, i have tested this probably 10 times since then. I CAN input destinations while driving...Everything works just like before. But now I can display ETA.
I am also running 2006.2 (Latest) Version of maps

Barry and John, do you see any change in the mute of the Nav voice from previous ?
( John before the uopdate, Barry from your '04)
I don't, so just wondering if I'm missing some new add on.
( ie was always able to mute the nav voice via the mute button-pg 114 of the command manual)

The mute does work different. Now you just hit the mute button while she is talking, and it mutes all audio nav prompts.
Before, you had to hold it down while she walk talking for a couple seconds.
Those are the biggest changes, mute and display of ETA, and stability.
It a update everyone would want....

New software for W211 COMAND to enable 3D view?
My dealer told me that Harman/Becker is developing a new software version for the W211 COMAND which is likely to include 3D view for the NAV and MAP screen (like in the new C and S) but they couldn't tell me when it would be available. They told me that it's a software update for the headunit and it has nothing to do with the MAP DVD in the trunk. Does anybody know when this new software will be out? I guess it will probably be included in the last (2009) W211.

I had the chance to play with the updated comand on a long drive this morning. while the car is in motion I can not enter address using the letters and numbers. I have to use the list soft keys (buttons). All the letter and number are greyed out. However once the car stop the letter and number are available. Also I could plug in a address that is a recent one or one that's saved in memory.

Its a safety feature. All map functions works and I can use the POI and recent address functions. I had Nav in my 2005 Chrysler and It did not allow me to input a new address nether. I had to use the addresses in memory or just pull over.

Also I notice while driving back home today is that, if you are on the Car's phone the NAV will not make announcement you will just see in one comand. However it you press the RPT button it will say the next turn or follow this road.
I remember a few time I be using the Nav while I was on the car phone with my wife and the Nav would say the next direction and my wife would ask me how's in the car with you....lmao..
. I would play and say my mistress...lol
