Strange Ticking noise

I have a strange ticking noise coming from the motor when the car is turned on, I usually turn it on every morning to warm it up and I noticed the ticking noise coming from the engine, sounds like a time bomb ticking away, what could it be?

Lifters? Don't know really but perhaps it is caused by letting it often run idle when cold.

I assume that you hear the noise when the engine is idling? If so then there should not be any loss of performance when driving.

Most likely what your hear is a little noise from the valves. Depending on how the car was driven up until now and what maintenance there might be a little wear on either the cams or valve stems. It should not be much but enough for you to sometimes hear it. If you can live with the clicking then don’t worry about it.

This is a very common issue on most Mercedes vehicles. I experienced this on my CLK and my E after about 20,000 miles on each.

HA HA!

You plagiarized this from sgaar. I knew I've read these words before:

thanks for the info, if it's not a big issue then i'll just leave it alone, I currently have 32K miles on my E500 and I was starting to worry about it.

Hey, imitation is the best form of flattery. Actually, I had cut and pasted that response awhile ago when I sent an email to my dealer since I had been experiencing the problem. I forgot where I got it from. I apparently did a search at the time. Nonetheless, I was told the issue is very common.

By the way, you guys are way too involved here if you actually remembered the response verbatim.

I believe the sound could also be the injectors.

Although motor mounts are normally associated with noise complaints when accelerating this remedy may solve your problem and is certainly worth looking into.

DTB P-B-07.00/21f – If the VIN is less than A224352, the dealer should install modified motor mounts that correct a “piston slap like sound” for the 03 e500. Even if out of warranty, this is a MB mandated modification, as such request a no cost goodwill repair. If the dealer refuses contact MBUSA 800-367-6372.

In addition, if the noise is isolated to the passenger side, sometimes the purge valve may cause a ticking sound and needs replacement.

If you need a copy of the DTB to support your claim, PM your email address.

My CLS55 has the same noise. When it's cold it sounds good but as soon as I go for a drive and stop somewhere the sound is present. I also notice it when I go to a drive through and stop at drive through window I here that cling sound coming from the engine. And i'm pretty easy on my engine. Ive had it since 65 miles it now as 10,000. My freinds s55 doesnt do it and he has 46000 miles.

and yes ive posted in other threads i just want all the diff answers

Some have suggested it could also be the oil pump or idler pulley

the noise could also be caused by carbon build up on the piston, sounds just like lifters, you can try some top eng cleaner BG

2005 MB E500
konigstiger,

after I read this thread, I'm beginning to notice that ticking noise too. Currently driving, 2005 MB E500 @ 37780 miles and it is still under warranty. What should I do? take it in to the dealer let them take a look at it or what? Please give me some suggestion. Thank you.

This is exactly what is happening with my CLK55. I now have 36K miles and the noise is driving me crazy. After the engine is warm it seems like the ticking noise gets louder. I'm gonna run a couple bottles of Techron throught it and see what happens. I'll post results here after.

I also have this noise coming from my 2003 E500 engine occasionally and my MB Dealer says its the fuel ejectors which is a normal engine operating noise not to worry about.

True others have told me about that, the weather has gotten warmer in the morning around 50s vs 30s we had in the past couple of months and I don't hear the ticking noise anymore.

Cool Tiny tap too!

My 99 clk-320 is making the same ticking sound from the front right side of my engine. It's a tiny tick more than a tap. The benzito has over 150,000 miles. I guess if I ran around for a 150,000 miles, I too would be making ticking sounds! I jus' wanna know what it is.
