$198 for service D? Is this right?
This is my second post here, I'm a newbie to MBwolrd, I've learned a lot from this forum, and I want to thank everyone on here.. Now to my question.. I just bought a pre owned 2003 E500 and the next servise due is service D in about 10000 miles. From what I've read here service D should be around $400 to $500. I just called House of Imports Mercedes Benz in Buena park Ca. and they quoted me $198.. Could this be true or can it be a very bad estimate? Thanks in advanced.

dealer service
sheet indicates 4hr routine maint,so the stealer less parts would be over 400 just labor,it looks like a normal a service,oil,filter,check fluids belts,washer fluid etc.
Go into your manual and look up fss and pull up a list of the other items it says are needed.It will give you an idea of how many additional items are on the list.
A good indie shop should be able to complete the work in under two hours but at that price you need to check if that includes the oil and parts.
Beware when it gets time for brakes on that baby,shop around cuz i helped a guy with one and the dealer wanted 1200 bucks.
budget now

- Switch ignition on (position one);
- Outside temperature display;
- Press button up or down on the steering wheel until the FSS PLUS indicator appears in the display;
- Press the trip odometer reset knob for about five seconds (Service Menu appears in the display);
- Select the items menu with the + or – button;
- Press the menu systems button;
- The service indicator now displays the items (1 – 14);
- Press the menu systems button until the outside temperature display appears.

Service A
I paid $198 for Service A on a new E350 on this first service within 12 months. You may want to clearly explain them your situation and if they are cherging less then it is good for you.

Go to this site: http://www.mercedestechstore.com and check out their training files section and you'll see the W211 section and you want the FSS Plus pdf. This will show you how to confirm the service done which removes the reminder on the dash. Here's an edited copy I've made to post on these forums but still recommend you download the full version (too big to post here).
Regards,
paul...

If
you are up around oakland/S.F. on business these guys have very fair rates for you non DIY types, with warrantied work and they come to you.
I don't often rec a shop but when one comes along that tries to contain costs and will fairly quote a service job,they need to be commended.

I was driving by along MacArthur Blvd in Santa Ana (this is in California) when I saw this shop "HAUS OF MERCEDES" they specialized in service and repair. I got curious and stop at their shop. I just ask a random question and ask how much a service D would cost. The guy told me its $80. I ask the guy again. Coz' I couldn't believe what I just heard. I ask him again, is this just labor? He said no. That includes everything oil change, filter change and inspection. Still doesn't add up.
I will call them tomorrow and ask the same question to see if its really 80 bux. The guy I talked to said he worked at the dealership for 10yrs as a mechanic.
Try calling them too and ask how much it cost on a particular service. Their number is 714.957.8281

One time I had oil change, asked and paid for synthetic oil, along w/ other services (filter, injection clean...). They were a bit behind in schedule, so car was still being oil changed when I stopped by to pick up the car. This is what shock me: they pump oil out from large container (often provided by truck). Despite my repeat asking, they keep assure that it's synthetic oil, just that they bought it in large quantity, so it came in tank (couple hundred gallon). I also saw the mechanic pump oil from same tank for couple other cars being oil changed too, one of which is probably a 25 years old 240D, not sure they need synthetic .....
This is what I know: synthetic oil never came that way, even large dealers like Fletcher or HouseOfImports still buy & fill in quart unit (can) and fill your car a quart of a time. My friend, who's master tech at House of Import, also told me that he never saw synthetic oil never came in large container tank. I have had several cars during the years, and had them services at lot of shop, large and small. For regular cheap a$$ oil change, I saw them all being pumped from container, but for synthetic, I always saw quart can by can pull into the car. That shop was the first place that told me that they have synthetic oil in large tank.
They also forgot to put back the bottom cover (the plastic piece to cover bottom of engine), and crack couple plastic tab that hold the electric fan to the front frame. Found out much later, when I had my car serviced at other place, and they pointed out to me.
If I remember it correctly, the shop owner is Joe. Quite friendly guy, sure know how to talk.
Just to be clear, I'm not saying they're crook or reckless in any form (they could be right, and somehow get to buy synthetic oil in large container from oil company, the missing-part/broken tab could all be unintended accident...), but from what I witnessed & happened to my car, I didn't feel comfortable bring the car back, and never came back to that place again.
