2008 E320
Question E320 Oil change OK?

I just picked up my 2008 E320 from an independent garage. My slip lists 5w30 Mobile 1 as the oil used. Is this a problem? I though the correct oil was 0w40 Mobile 1? Can the 5w30 cause problems? Thank you

Boy, are you ever confused.

A 2008 E320 is a diesel and must use MB spec 229.51 oil.

The ONLY oil you can get that meets this spec--unless you mail-order German-made oils--is Mobil 1 Formula M ESP 5W-40, which is only available at Mercedes dealers or one or two mailorder sources.

Use of any oil other than MB spec 229.51 will cause damage to your particulate filter that will not be covered under warranty. This is use of ANY QUANTITY, BTW, meaning do not add a quart of something else.

Some dealers and indie shops carry 5w30ESP make sure that is what they installed, examine the label if need be.You do not want to be on the paying end of a particulate filter if you make a warranty claim at the dealer and it is denied.

I thought the E320 came in a gaser and well as Bluetech diesel?

Last E320 gasser was 2005. It's E350 since then. M112 vs M272 engine.

Let us hope that the OP is in Europe and the shop knows what they are doing. Otherwise, the warranty on emissions control equipment is dead.
