How often does the fuel filter need to be changed?

And how much should this service cost? My car has 112k miles, and my dealer says I'm due for a fuel filter change, at a cost of $950. Is that right?

It should be replaced every 100k mi if you want your car to perform like new. A while back, i called the dealer's part department, they quoted me $395 just for the fuel filter. The filter is in the fuel tank under the rear seats, so it takes some time to replace it. An indy shop can do this job for about $600-$700. If you don't see degradation in performance, the filter is not clogged and it's fine keep on driving it. In fact, Toyota does not recommend changing the fuel filters in their trucks (not sure about their cars). I have driven a 4Runner with 200k mi with the original fuel filter and the truck was still running fine.

This.

Terry, I've got a friend that just so happens to be an MB tech. He told me the same thing. Yes, MB recommends changing it, but I thought it was 75K miles. Anywho, he says unless your car is experiencing performance issues, in which the filter could be the culprit, don't bother with it.

Same info I got from my service mgr at the local dealer. They don't reco changing unless it is a problem. The rear seat has to be pulled tank opened and the fuel level / filter assembly must be pulled. If there is a problem after pulling the dealer has to do it again. Lots of labor for little gains.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I don't think I'll be changing mine out then. But, "just in case", what do you all mean by having "performance issues"? What things should I be looking for as an indicator of needing the filter change?

Poor acceleration, sputtering, rough idle........

Think about what your car would feel like if it were starving for fuel. Look for those things.
