Aux input or iPod options

My car has the glove box Aux input but does not have the iPod cable (or interface or adapter or whatever it's called) and I recall reading that once you install the iPod cable that you lose your auxiliary input because it's either Aux or iPod.

My question is, if I install the iPod cable, can I use anything like (or if they even exist) an iPod to 3.5mm adapter, or iPod to 3.5 and iPod splitter so I can use either, or both?

If a person has some soldering skills, you can retain both.... they would just share the same port. I have done it before for a few clients.

Soldering, like on the cable? What I'm imagining a cable that has an iPod female end and a 3.5mm other end (or split with an iPod male AND 3.5mm end), then attached to the MB iPod cable male end. Like that?

No, the audio port on the back of the radio is a 3 pin. When installing the factory kit - the iPod is plugged in and the Aux is removed and vice versa. It is pretty easy to join them both together and have them both plugged in at the same time.

You could even play vocals on the iPod and music on the Aux and "mix em" live... just kidding, but they would both be live at the same time.

OK... just googled... so if I get the MB iPod cable and decide I want to use a non-iPod device there are iPod female to 3.5mm male cables. It's just a manual cable swap required. I wish I could use both.

So I'd end up with both an iPod and 3.5mm plug? That's what I want!

Any insight into what needs to be soldered together??

sorry, we don't have any photos or have done a writeup or anything. It would just be connecting the Aux into the COMAND input in a Y configuration. Typical audio/electrical/electronics stuff. Any audio shop should able make it up for you in 20 minutes.

So that it Y's into an iPod and an 3.5mm plug?

The COMAND has a 3 pin plug. You Y into the three pin. One part of the Y goes to the iPod kit, one part to the 3.5mm (then the plug itself of course is the 3rd leg of the Y)
