The significance of the speed..
The energy to be dissipated increases geometrically with speed, so it may make sense that the rear brakes don't complain much except when braking from higher speeds like 60 mph. At low speeds, with the window down and radio and aircon off, you would still expect to hear some grinding, through, if the problem is the brakes.
Check the disks for scoring and ridges. They should be even and flat, but not necessarily shiny.
Depending on the wheels, you can probably see the disks well enough without removing the wheels. Compare their condition with the front disks.
And as has been said, take a look at the pads (wheel off is best for this). You may be grinding metal on metal.
You may have a rear diff problem, but start with looking at the brakes.

thank you guys for the great responses. i have been sick for a few days. so sorry for the late response. i do have meat on my rear pads and rotors are smooth. based on your responses i am going to buy new rotors and rear pads. the rotors might be warped. visually i cant tell but it sure feels it on hard stop at 60mph and above.

Usually warped rotors will cause more of a shaking or wobbling with the steering wheel, is it just the grinding sound? Start with the cheapest component first of course.

Wouldn't think so, if it were a bad rear differential you would more likely hear it under acceleration or noise when in gear at idle. Also you would have a lot more vibration from the rear or in some cases fluid leak. I think it sounds like the brake linings, I'm no expert but a metallic grinding noise usually stems from that issue.
