Replace Key Fob for W211 E320

I've benefitted from using the various Mercedes forums so I thought it is high time that I contribute to the forums.

My key fob lock button was cracked and I figured that it was a matter of time before the other buttons also cracked.

I followed many forum threads that said the only way to replace the key fob is to purchase one from the stealership. Other threads said it was possible but there were no pictures posted to help out with the proceedure.

I purchased a key fob shell on e-bay for around $20.00 and it took three days for me to receive it. I took the circuit board from the old key and inserted it into the new one and it worked with out any issues.

Attached is the proceedure that I used. I hope the pictures help.

Good Luck

I know that this is almost a 2-year old post, but I just ordered a replacement case on ebay for $13.95 with free shipping. Taking the old fob apart and putting the "guts" in the new fob was easy. The only difference is that the new fob does not have the MB emblem on the backside. Sure beats paying $200+ for a new dealer fob.

I'm having problems with my key, it works intermittently, so I have put it aside not knowing it would work, or if would get stranded. I changed battery last week, but with no improvement.

Mike take my advice and return that cheap replacement key. The fitment for circuit board and batteries are extremely poor and the feel of the fob is terrible. Since your key fob is fine internally, there is no need to grab a new $300 key from the dealer. Just search around for a used OEM key in good condition and swap the internals. Feels like a brand new key. I've bought several in the past for $30-50.

Thanks for the heads up. I will try this key for a while and see how it works. It feels identical to my old fob with the exception of the chrome MB emblem on the back of it. I will look for a OEM replacement if this fob acts up.

Replaced mine today. Coat $12, labor 5 minutes. I did removed Mercedes logo from the old case hoping to super glue it but unfortunately it is not possible. I just put it on the ring.

Definitely worth it. I'll try to find some alternative way to put the logo on... I'll post here.

Keep us updated on the logo thing. I had my replacement for about three weeks now, the only difference is that the buttons are a little more hard to press, but my old remote was eight years old with cracked buttons, so it is hard to compare. My wife's remote buttons are also harder than my original remote.

Found some logo.. Its actually a flat Mercedes badge. One of those with the blue colors and feathers around Merc star.

Here's part number
000-817-02-16 i hope its going to lay flat.. Because the key shell isn't flat.. If it was flat then it would be much easier. I ordered one should be here Friday.. I'll post with the results.

Nice work and just to clarify for anyone reading this, an electronics swap into a new shell is the best way to go if your key itself is cracked but still working. However, if the key is NOT working your only option is go to the stealership and get a new key since the circuit board is a one-time-writeable ROM chip.

key fob replacement

I purchased my fob from Amazon. Even had the emblem on it. Followed distructions on how to separate components, reinstalled, works great. Had a good price as I recall. 10.00 bucks. Buy my air, cabin and oil filters their to. Oil filter on sale now, 10.00 bucks, normally 20.00. I bought three.
