Fuel pump in 2008 E350 costs over $3,000.00

It is integrated into the fuel tank on E350 PZEV models. To replace the fuel pump you need to replace the gas tank. What was MB thinking with this design?

I am new to MB's and just picked up a pristine 2008 E350 with 100,000 miles. Are these cars only for millionaires? I never expected my first bill was going to be over $3,000.00 for a fuel pump! I am already thinking about selling it.

Is the e350 considered to be a lemon?

It's a beautiful car and dives great

It is not MB, it is California with ridiculous emission restrictions (I do not mean to offense) asking for absolute not one molecule of gasoline having the chance to escape the fuel system into the environment. Since different rubber hoses and clamps that are part of the system cannot be 100% sealed MB had no choice but to provide a completely sealed tank. Pump and sensors are inside the tank so you have to pay for the whole thing. I changed my fuel pump for $300.
However you should check this forum because there are some MB recalls regarding defects of the fuel system that are covered for free.

That may be your problem right there. These cars were never meant to go under water...

I don't know what part of California you are in, but Mercedes of El Cajon replaced the fuel tank on my '08 E350 at no charge at around ~125K miles

Is yours a PZEV? - Because the fuel pump is sealed inside the fuel tank. $2,200 for the part and 5 hrs of labor

If the question is for me - yes, mine is PZEV (all California models are). This extends the warranty to 15 years/150,000 miles but some dealers are sheisters and will tell you it's not covered by warranty. I would not relent until they replace it under warranty and if you have to, raise the issue with MBZ North America or just go to another dealer

Eurodriver - I went to an independent in Santa Rosa, CA. They didn't mention anything about it being under warranty. I have already paid them $3,200.00, these guys are highly respected and very honest, do you think they just didn't know? Do I have any recourse?

If they learned it is under warranty would they get reimbursed from MB?

Just for future reference, can anyone tell me if model year 2007 California PZEVs are covered as well? I'm in Florida but my car was bought originally in California.

Call the dealer and see if you can get reimbursed. I kind of doubt they'll do it though as they weren't able to inspect the car to see if it required replacement.

My local dealer changed the fuel tank on my E63 no questions asked under the warranty. They even let me take a loaner while the car was there. I had a fuel smell with mine after filling it up and fuel pooling under the back seats.

I went to my independent MB Service that did the replacement for $3200 and asked them about the fuel pump being under warranty and they told me they know about the warranty and they had called MB and were told that my VIN # didn't qualify for the free repair, but I am still going to check with MB of El Cajon and MB of Santa Rosa and see if that is true

Strigoi - I called a dealer and the guy in the service dept said that as far as he knows I can bring in the work order from the repair and they can get me reimbursed, but they might need to check my VIN first because the shop that did the job told me they gave the VIN to MB of North America who told them only certain VIN's qualify.

Hopefully they decide to cover it.

I believe the VIN check is to confirm whether it is a PZEV vehicle. The extended warranty applies in PZEV states - I don't know how it works if you have a PZEV vehicle but are now in a non=PZEV state.
Check out this thread click here and here.

Asterisk = 8 years/80,000 miles, all others 15 years/150,000 miles. Agree VIN check most likely to confirm vehicle is PZEV (code 917) note PZEV is not included in extended warranty but is covered by emission warranty.

Service and Warrenty

Konig - So all of the items without the asterisk are covered for 15/15K for 2008 California PZEV models? Or is it only certain VIN's ?
My Indy told me they checked with MB about the fuel pump/gas tank problem and said my VIN was excluded, even though it has been in California the entire time

How can you tell if the Vehicle is PZEV ? My build sheet doesn't show a code 917, but does show a code 915 "Fuel Tank with Larger Capacity"
I assume I should contact a local dealer to see if any recall service has been performed regarding the fuel system?

Does not show 917, not PZEV. Although already posted multiple times, see attachment yet again for extended warranty applicable to your vehicle.
