rattling noise

I noticed, on my drive to work this morning, that there seems to be a rattling noise coming from the rear deck. It sounds like a speaker grill is loose or something like that. I'm about 1k away from my first service and am going to bring this up. Has anyone else had a similar sound coming from the rear of their car? I'd love to have it pinpointed before I go in

I had the same thing. Turned out to be a bad weld on the right side of the trunk hinge. Go figure? My biggest complaint is a consistently inconsistent rattle under the radio/vent. Good luck.

There is a bulletin for the rattle coming from the center console. Konigstigster posted it a few months ago.

Do you have the CD changer loaded up? I never put a CD in for a long time. Then loaded it up to try it out. AFter a while took the CD's out and a rattle developed. Loaded the CD changer back up and rattle has never come back.

I have a rattling noise and I know tons of other have it too.

Rattling noise comes from the passenger side rear pillar (C-pillar) around the fuel filler door. It is not the door itself but something on top side of the door inside the pillar/fender.

I originally thought the noise comes from the center console but then discovered it comes from the rear. I took the car to my dealer and showed it to the service manager. You can verify if you have this issue by lightly "hammering" on the steel just above the fuel filler door with the side of your hand. There is a definite rattling inside, like something loose against the steel. This makes very annoying noise when driving over some rough road surface and some lane reflectors when there are several in a row. "Attention grooves" that are used before some traffic lights or stop signs are a very good rattler.

We tested 4 new E 350 models at the dealer, one of them a Bluetec, and they all made thge same noise when "hammered".

My service manager said he will ask MB but 3 weeks later came back to me saying "it can't be a problem as all the cars did it", which is one of the biggest BS statements I have ever heard. He probably never asked MB anything about it.

Unfortunately I have not had time to go dig after this as I travel all the time. When time allows I will get to it directly with MB as I think they have either a design or manufacturing flaw and I know they spend a bit of money to build their cars not to make rattling noises.

One day I also noticed that this rattling was resonating with music. Could not hear this inside the car but did outside, which is very dissapointing when it sounds like one of those $15 000 low riders with too big stereo systems.

Perhaps someone else of the "gang" has time to take this up with his/her dealer and get it fixed so I can tell my service manager to eat his own sh**. I believe this is a quality recall that MB might want to resolve. I am absolutely sure they want to hear about this to get it addressed on the future cars they build.

Thanks MCF. Unfortonatley that doesent help. I think another piece of felt needs to be placed between the two units. Next time I take it in, I will have them address it. EuroSport has been great with these kinds of things (so far).

All of a sudden I started getting a subtle rattle. Noticed that it came about after I handed the controls over to my wife and I took the right seat. I raised the headrest to suite my comfort. When I took the controls back, I noticed that there was a slight rattle coming from the head rest. I lowered it slghtly and the noise went away.

Don't know if this is your issue but you may want to check it.

Hello,
Did you check the plastic/fabric cover on top of the rear window trim (Behind the rear lamp)? This cover covers the AM/FM antenna, etc. In my case, this cover rattling like crazy. You can tap it to simulate the rattlung noise. I took it to the dealership last week and they fixed it. They put some special tape inside it and the noise is now gone. When I tapped it, it seems like a solid filled sound. No more ratling.

Good luck!

I have the same rattle/clunk from right rear when encountering bumps in pavement with left rear wheel. Not always there, but when going over a speed bump, regardless of speed (5+ MPH), I get it. I think it might be what Arrie is experiencing and perhaps the what BPhilly had before correction.
