All different things. I think you have to go to dealer to update Comand. MB didn't really have a remote start option til the last couple years so I don't think it's an option for your car. Navigation is a separate update from Comand, but I think you can just buy the DVD. Get ready to pay 2 prices.

I just would like to see if there are any notable differences after updating.

Well that's just the comand update. Navigation update lists for $250, but I think you find it cheaper online, but that's probably more like $180-$200. So you're looking at a little over $400 although someone else claimed the dealer was able to do it for around $150 so it may be something you can negotiate.

Where did you see that price list? My local dealer is quoting me nearly $600 for nav map update.

Probably because they want to charge you for the hours it might take to load the maps. You can do it yourself by just loading the DVD and letting the car run while it's being updated. If you did it with the car off, it might kill the battery. I suppose you could also hook up a trickle charger to the car. I found a part number Q6460343 for my car, but it's NTG4 and I believe your car is NTG4.5 but it might be the same map. I'd ask this vendor that has it listed for $186.75 if it's the right one for your car.

You can no longer do that with the 2013. The maps come on a USB drive and require a specific activation code that is generated based on VIN # and thus can't be used on other vehicles.

While I believe that's correct, I think you can still order the maps and load it yourself, but the best way to find out is to contact an MB dealer that sells parts online and see what their price is. The list price for the maps is $249.

I've contacted 3 MB dealers, all 3 says it can no longer be installed by the end user. That it requires the car be plugged into their diagnostic system in order for the update to install and activate. All 3 quoted prices in the $550 to $600 range.

The local dealers want you to go there. Try www.mbdirectparts.com and see if they can get you a part number and price, just give them your VIN. NTG4 you can get the DVD and the MB site mentions a DVD for NTG4.5. Someone else mentioned it came with a PIN code so they could only use it once. At one point NTG4.5 wasn't listed on their website, but now I see it's listed again as the 2016 maps seem to be out now. $600 is outrageous when you can get a Garmin for $100 or use google maps for free.

Prestige mercedes benz. Thats where I saw those prices.

I dont think cars should be tampered with. Theres certain things that are better left to a certified dealership. They might look expensive but they guarantee their work.

I'm an engineer. I don't mind tampering with things. I do oil changes myself and just did rear brakes. It's a pretty simple process to load a dvd and wait til it asks you for a 2nd dvd.

But you're right, people need to know their own limitations. There are people on here who swap out engines and transmission on their own. I don't think I'm going to go that far partly because I don't have the space/tools/knowledge.

I never said they were local dealers. I contacted 1 local dealer, 1 dealer in NYC and 1 dealer in Texas. and all 3 gave pretty much the same price, 2 of them were 2k to 3k miles away.

I've contacted mbdirectparts.com as well. Never heard back from them. Will contact them again.

Just heard back from mbdirectparts.com.

So for 2013 and newer, the vehicle needs to be hooked up directly to the dealer's computer in order for an activation code to be generated.

The actual disk is about $70-$80, but it won't install unless the command system is connected to the dealer's diag system which has to be connected to MB for the activation code.

So it looks like there is no other way than to take it to a dealer.

There were a couple other messages that mentioned some dealers can generate a PIN code once you give them your VIN. Don't really know what the cost for that is. I wonder how the DVD is going to work as MB's site list it for sale at $249.

From what I understand (from talking to various vendors online, and speaking with a # of MB dealer service and parts depts), the DVD is for older vehicles. Some required a PIN other's didn't. Those that did, did not need to be connected to the dealer's diag computer for the pin. Just need VIN.

With the latest systems (2013 and newer), it is now a USB flash drive instead of DVD. And requires the vehicle be connected to the diagnostic computer @ the dealership to generate the PIN/Activation code. without this code the new map data will not install.

I believe it has to do with what version of NTG that you have. I think NTG4 which was 2010-2011 didn't need a pin code, later years did. There's a separate thread where someone upgraded to NTG5.1 and one poster mentioned being able to get a pin code.
