Cold start engine noise m276 2012 e350
Hi everyone,
I just recently purchased a 2012 MB e350 4matic with the m276 motor.
Great car so far but I had once concern, even at the time of purchase.
The vehicle was purchased from a Porsche dealership.
I thought the engine sounded like a diesel motor but was told by the dealer's technician that the direct injectors make this noise.
Still I searched the internet, including this forum, and found these engines have an issue with two timing chain tensioners and check valves.
This TSB is related to the issue: https://www.tsbsearch.com/Mercedes-B...05-10-P-056435
Per this TSB, my engine falls within range for install chain tensioners and check valves.
I am located in Canada.
I called MB Canada who advised I take the car to a MB dealer.
I printed out the TSB and showed it to the service advisor at my local MB dealer.
The dealer could not replicate the problem and stated I should "monitor it".
I made a video during a cold start-up:
Do you guys think I have the issue stated in the TSB or is this normal noise from a m276 motor?
Maybe I am being paranoid.
Appreciate any insight and thanks in advance!

You may want to read, and/or talk to the OP

or an even older thread

From that thread, the following is worth watching,
A bit more formal description, w/o non-technical commentary, of the steps to change the chain tensioner only

not just yet...
I hear direct injectors but no tensioner rattle... do you? What kind of engine oil do you use...5W40, right?
Replacing your upper tensioners is a good idea to preserve the oil pressure that lubricates the cam lobe driving the HPF pump.

In any case, have you checked your datacard to see if the Engine is within the TSB?

I'm not sure what oil was used. The last oil change was done by the Porsche dealer and there is no indication in the service paperwork or dash sticker what oil was used.

timing maintenance parts...
These parts benefit from regular inspection to minimize wiring harness contamination.
