Hello,
I bought a 2010 W212 E350 that have an aftermarket headlights, when the lights are off the (hazard light and blinkers) work fine, but when I turn the lights on it works for about 30 seconds and then do not work again until I turn off the car and start it again!
I am suspecting the lights switch because one time an error came that said “Auto light inoperative” but auto lights are working fine.
Any thoughts or expierence having such an issue?

Maybe it has LED turn signals and that particular car did not have the LED package so the ECU is shutting down that circuit?

 

Thanks for your reply…yes it has LED turn signals, I changed the passenger’s side turn signal into a normal bulb and it also didn’t work when lights are on, if I change both sides could it work?
and why it works when the headlights are off?

 

I have no idea, I'm wondering if those are the correct aftermarket headlights for a 2010, as it did not come with fender marker lights, I believe that was in that model years headlights? wild guess, my '12 has two amber lights one normal size one small, they both flash with the turn signals, but I have fender lights. Someone more knowledgeable will chime in soon!

 

a 2010 W212 likely has a half dozen different combinations of headlights and related options, and the car's power control systems (SAM, etc) are coded with what options it was shipped with. Who knows where your aftermarket lamps fit into this.

 

so is there any advice how to solve the issue?
Also I have noticed that it should gave the parking lamps (the lamps monted on the side of the bumper for USA models) but it has been removed and the second that the error for these lamps come up in the dash, the blinkers stop working.
IDK if this info have to do anything with the issue.

Well yes! Ok with that knowledge I believe you have replacement headlights for '11-'13 year cars in a '10 model, it may be for '12 and '13 only with H7 halogen bulbs originally, unless your car came with xenons in the lighting package option.

So first I would recommend getting LCG your VIN so he can tell you what your car came with originally and then if you had the the stock halogen headlights you may be able to replace them with after market lights specifically for a 2010 model, or if you had the lighting package you may need that style of headlight assembly to return normal function.

yes, the in my case the car was a US import and the previous owner did a sideline marker delete( the orange light in the sides)
I found the the wires for the markers and did rerouted them to make a illuminated grill😆 and connected it to 2 LED strips.
you can also use an inline resistor if you have the same issue.

does your car have stock factory lighting, or has it been modified?

does it have halogen, HID, or Dynamic or ILS LED headlights ?

 

The lighting is factory, there are no halogens. There is bi xenon headlight w. active curve light and automatic high beam,LED blinkers

 

bixenon is HID, ok.

so, presumably these lights used to work, right? when did things change to the current state where the blinkers don't work after the headlight was on? were any modules or parts replaced?

 

I don't know when it happened because I don't get an error on the dashboard. I found it out by accident. Recently I changed one HID I put Osram D1s which I don't think is a problem

 

well, debugging this is likely going to require using a multimeter and a wiring diagram, and checking the various circuits. There's probably a dozen different front lighting wiring diagrams for the 212 depending on the many option codes, the way to get the correct diagram is to access the WIS with your VIN. You gotta be careful around the HID lamps, they run on a lot of DC volts, enough to kill you if you touch the wrong circuit at the wrong time

 

yeah, HID use a plasma discharge from high voltage through xenon gas.Stay away from live igniter, if you must look at its circuitry for fried components then only do so while disconnected out of the car.

 

yeah, basically, I'd keep any poking around at an HID system to the 12VDC input side to the ignitor power module.

My initial gut feeling is, check the grounds... like, check the grounds at the turn signals (one meter probe on the ground wire to the turn lamp, the other to a solid ground like battery - terminal) and then cycle the headlights, and see if that turn signal ground 'bounces' I'm guessing the 'blinker' function comes off a SAM module or something via canbus rather than a old school conventional blinker circuit.

 

of, if you post your VIN I'll poke around my WIS and see if I can find a wiring diagram for the front lighting. no guarantees, WIS can be really confusing.

gah, 100s of pages of WIS data to dig through, and I've had too many beers to wanna try and figure out whats applicable to yours.

I haven't found the HID diagram yet, but the ones I've looked at, its all controlled by the front SAM and CANbus. My gut feeling is, you're gonna need a really good late model Mercedes independent mechanic willing to do difficult diagnostics
