Command center doesn’t light up

Hey guys I just bought this 2010 e350 and the radio works but the command center doesn’t light up. I can see the radio station thru the cluster. I bought a used replacement with the same part number and same thing. All fuses are good engine and trunk. And info I’m stuck

COMAND DISPLAY REMAINS OFF...

You will want to scan your car to retrieve list faults. We recommend using a cReader Elite MB by Launch or better the @BenzNinja service.

By the time everything is sayed and done your COMAND unit may have an internal defect with solder bad or missing junction.

> Display vs. CMD:
The display is dark either because it's genuinely not working or because it's not being turned on by COMAND module.

Your good scanner will let you figure that under 2mn. Personally I bet display module is fine.

> ROOT CAUSE... UNCOOLED
You buy a $1500 replacement head that goes bad in less than 2Mo... what gives??

These CMD + DISPLAY units are HOT and feature a dedicated fan inside the dashboard to blows cabin air.
Great, then what?

There's a dedicated air filter that plugs up from dusty cabin air. When air flow is canceled, CMD gets to overheat.

Luckily we can read internal Temp data using cheap scanner tool.

First line is the root cause

Well, the right tool really helps

CMD BUS issues

You have a 80% chance the display can not work due to telematics having issues. This stops the CMD boot enumeration.

Now I think top job is to troubleshoot line 1. Telem. Module either in the rear left or center. See it with scanner.

I’ll try to disconnect the battery. I notice it has an exide battery. Should I buy a Mercedes battery?

You need to turn the display on by pressing the volume control knob
So perhaps you don't know that

Or the switch behind it is faulty if it won't turn the display on

Make sure you have volts at the fuse that powers the Comand unit, not just check the fuse itself

I can turn on/off the radio with that button. But the display doesn’t light up and the display does work in the cluster

Yours might be a bit different to mine being 2010 but:

Did you buy another screen ?
Checked all the flexstrips are fitted in the connectors and locked down ?
No bent pins on the connectors on the case ?

I had to replace my Comand screen
because someone had sprayed car cleaner on it which got into the screen and wrecked it

You can buy new screens online at AliExpress for good price
Match up the part number with yours

Was the item you bought known to work

It is likely to be the screen itself
Looks like you have skills,
so disassemble the Comand display unit by taking the back cover off it
and undo the flexstrips that connect the display and then reconnect them
and see if that fixes it.

It's a fair bet that the screen itself is faulty
and if so you can get one on AliExpress for about $50 USD
Worth swapping it out anyway to have a nice new display

I tried I don’t have the same screen as you I took it apart and put it back together and nothing. Aliexpress is member or a website to get a new screen

yes the carpet comes up easy. There is an aluminum box take off the 4 nuts. In the black cover by the rocker panel you see wires open that up and you see these can bus. See if you see any green corrosion.

Cheers mate , tried lifting carpet , struggled, did you need to remove seat to access the panel I see a black plastic cover next to side of seat but nothing inside is it in middle of floor or near the side panel on side wall at door , do you hsve a picture of the place further out to see whole door floor and location from outside looking in.
does look a bit complicated a job I think for me .
on a side note can you try another display from other car, or does it need coding or something. Seen screen on eBay might try that before ripping floor out .
thanks again for help

water intrusion

The same CAN BUS B crosses over from driver to passenger footwell... both sides have distribution bars. Takenpictures and mark your wires before getting creative or mad with tiny wires.

Peel back carpet on both sides to inspect for water damage.

Ultimately you need to fix the incoming water leak before it ruins SAM Module.

the screen doesn’t have the code. I also bought another radio and same thing no code needed. I don’t know if it’s the same thing in other country
