Cup Holder frustration

Ok. So, first of all. I'm not your typical MB target audience, so you're going to get no filter here & no justification of a purchase, that said, I do love the car and the driving experience as a whole. Never though I'd enjoy an automatic as much as this.

I'm in one because I'm a carer for my Dad and he's no longer allowed to drive so he wanted a fancy motor for me to drive him around in before he passes away. We're in a 220d.

My last personal car was a Mondeo ST 2.2 tdci and I am frustrated with a reduction in quality and ergonomics in various elements of more modern "exec" cars.

The stock stereo is still inferior to the sony unit in my mondeo, which came as standard with the car. The 2012 BMW 5 series I was in prior was absolutely shocking.. worst stereo I've heard since my Peugeot 106

Also, why can't I have the option of an aux input.. once tiny little port.. is that so much to ask for? When I plug my ipod into the usb port, the interface I'm forced to use is so slow it's basically unusable, it would take about 10 mins to scroll to the Z on my artist list. Yet I have an SD card slot?? who even uses SD cards? Does anyone know if it's possible to add an aux input?

I've jumped 2 cars now without a proper multifunctional and frustration free cup/can holder. (it's the little things) My old mondeo had a simple hole behind gear stick that fit a can and a cup AND it had a fast food cup holder in the centre console. You throw the car around a corner and neither would go anywhere.. The stowage package is evidently only for fast food cups. Something I'm almost never drinking in the car, I'm usually drinking a can.

So.. to my point. do any of you know where I can get an adapter that fits cans? I've had a quick look on ebay but I can't seem to find anything. I can't be the only one frustrated by this glaring missing functionality.

Also I have a very rattley rear view mirror.. does anyone know of a fix for that?

PS. I also want my proper hand brakes back as an option in modern cars.

To each his own. I've had many cars with an aux input that I never used. My E300 has an SD slot in use 100% of the time as it is used for music and video. The 3 USB ports are used for wifi hotspot, profile backup and mass storage as needed. The iPod is a relic from decades ago. Copy the contents of your iPod to an SD card or a USB stick. The COMAND system can handle 50,000 files.

Agreed, I have a small USB stick with 6GB space and I use it back and forth between my E450 and BMW R1250RT motorcycle which also has a USB slot to play music via BT to my helmet.

For the cup holder issue, do you have the spring loaded plastic "fingers?" I ask because I also only have cans and even when full they are quite secure.

I have the 4 protrusions yes but they doesn't seem to require much force to retract at all.. cans just tip over when I turn.

I guess you are in the UK ( as I am ), which model do you have? Do you have Comand?

We have different models in the UK and you may be better off asking your question on one of the UK sites.

True.. it is indeed a relic.. but it's a relic that's capacity is yet to be matched. my phone's micro sd slot only goes up to 128gb and I need a portion of that for photos etc. I think newer phones have doubled that now, but it's still not coming close to my ipod.

know I'm the minority, obviously everyone else my age is using spotify pretty much exclusively. I'm the weirdo but.. why does it have to be either or.. you can have all the inputs and please everyone.

I will try the SD slot.. but 50k tracks, navigated incredibly slowly, is of no interest to me. If you're saying the system speeds up when using an SD then I'll look into it. Perhaps I need an OTA update? but I need to go to Mercedes to get the vin changed over to my mercedes me account first before I can explore that.. I tried downloading the update to a usb but couldn't see an option in the menu to run the update.

I can still get about 3x more tracks on my ipod than I can get in the command system if we're saying about 3mb a track on average

So you want 150.000 tracks? So i take it that every song is 3 minutes, thats 20 songs an hour
lets say you have an average of 3 hours of driving time per day where you listen to that music. By my rough calculations... it would take you 7 years to go through your catalogue if you were to listen to every song once.

This is what I consider a third world problem:-)

Put a handkerchief in your cupholder, it will also take any small spills.

While this may look like a joke.. I'm being deadly serious. I just want to be able to put a can down in my car.

I have a
1 TB SD card 1 TB SD card
that works quite well in my camera. It can also be used in the car. A 1 TB card can hold about 17,000 music tracks or 250 full length movies.

I only have 15k songs on my ipod as it stands. so no, I don't need 50k.

I don't like the idea of spending 16k and then having to use a handkerchief to stabilise my beverage

You can't be "deadly serious" about a cupholder. As far as cupholders go, I place a canned soda in my cupholders all the time without any issue or complaint.

I have movies (mp4) on the SD card. In COMAND I select the media device. The contents are listed and I select what I want. Video will only play when the car is stopped though there are hardware workarounds available.

In some european countries we have slimmer taller cans so that might be his complaint. I live in Sweden and coca colas cans are the slimmer taller 330ml which wont sitt stable in the cupholders, but pepsi cans that are the wider lower cans fit well. But to hate on a car so much just because they wont comfortably fit a typ of can is a little much. Also whats the problem with the ipod interface? It works better than aux I have used in other cars but apple carplay is the best solution

The cupholders in my W212 (and also the W213) are dedicated units that lock in place and are easily removable. I imagine Mercedes did it this way, so that cupholder assemblies can be interchanged on the assembly line, based on which cupholder size is appropriate for XYZ country.

I'm not aware that any cupholder can hold a can of Red Bull securely. But in that case the complaint is with Red Bull, not Mercedes-Benz.

see link: https://www.hemkop.se/produkt/Coca-c...k-101291199_ST

the coke cans look like this, like slightly larger red bull cans. These dont fit well in my car that has the removable insert which is made for the shorter wider cans that they stopped selling over here a while back. I think thats the source of his complaints. What Im saying is that its a minor inconvenience and he shouldnt **** on the car because of it. Also id rather have the standard cup holders so I can fit cups from drive through.

My previous range rover evoque had a red bull can sized holder in between the regular cup holder, see the link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Ran...-/322299179895

I think it was a nice elegant solution to cater for everyone, weird it hasnt catched on as it doesnt increase dimensions that much

Well, it's now April 2, and our April Fool's day OP has made his 9 posts yesterday and is now gone more than 30 hours now.

If anyone is still losing sleep over the cupholder quandry, I would find an insulated cup holder to increase the diameter of the skinny cans. Every Dollar Store here in the US has them, so I assume they're an item in skinny can countries, too.

First World issue. Folks in some countries would welcome soda cans of any size/shape.

So I have to agree with the cup holder problem. The main issue is that the springs for the tabs are too week. They are fine for paper cups, but metal cans (or thermoses) are not properly held and therefore rattle over bumps and tip over in corners. Additionally the flimsiness of the tabs means that they themselves rattle and creak.

I did come up with a somewhat novel but also a little bit crude solution that works surprisingly well.

Each cup holder has 4 tabs (2 on the outside and two on the inside). What I did was remove the assembly and glue four small rubber pieces to the outside tabs so that they would be flush with he wall of the cup holder. In the picture this is the grey thing you see. I then put three elastic bands around the entire assembly. What this does is make the 4 outside tabs of the cup holder much stiffer. Because of the design there was no way to do this with the inside tabs, but it turns out that stiffening up the outside is sufficient.

To deal with the rattling and creaking, I installed a thin pice of black foam on the floor of the tray and also added some graphite to

all the tabs and springs of the cup holder.

Problem solved. We will see how long it lasts.
