Assistance features inoperative
only a proper diagnostics will tell
If you are not under warranty, you could get our service and safe upto 80% on repairs
if you are under warranty, who cares. just take it to the dealer

FWIW, while driving this has happened to me as well. Usually withing 10 to 15 minutes it clears itself up. Other times, like you, it is not working, I make a stop, turn off the ignition and when I start the car everything is working fine.
Go figure!

The good news is there is a quick free fix: chassis REBOOT (*)
This is a mature problem MB has producef for over a decade. The poker face until warranty expires is can not reproduce!
This is caused by transient network disruptions. Whats involved is the combination of marginal voltage and poor connections. Under conditions high-speed modules disfunction sometimes earning an ECU/TCU "limp mode" in the fast lane.
+++ (*):
The bad news is :
-- long term fix involves reworking VIP solderless modules.
-- the free fix temporarily sanitize the CGW swamped by rogue modules.
-- I have this survey detailed under my signature plus here as $3 fix for free because you've paid enough.
-- THIS IS NOT ANY RANDOM MYSTERY! It purpose built electronics that already runs marginally under warranty.
Easily fixed though with NEW MODULES the way the business was designed to be run:
- ESP!,
- SCM!,
- EIS!,
- ISM!,
- SAM/CGW,
- MFK,
- AAC,
- DCU,
- ... (ECU/TCU: ok!)
Choices are: use the parts-canon or troubleshooting labor for less than $25k.

After a period of no error messages following the service visit in November, the error messages returned. These messages appear every time I start the car and randomly as I'm driving, and its getting VERY annoying!! I took the car back in February and the technician reported that there were fault codes stored, (U042902) - implausible data were received from the steering column module. General signal fault U0429E1. The service manager said that they consulted with MB and were told to NOT replace the steering column module, that the fault codes in the driver assistance systems control unit are precautionary messages. He said that new coding parameters will be available second quarter for the HOSWD module and the new software will be installed when it's available.
Now the big question..... what are the chances that this will fix the problem??

This is just buying time to expire warranty coverage when expensive parts can start flying on your dime.
This refined CAN chaos is far from new. Poor networking is engineered from factory with solderless peripheral modules and unstable voltage swings.
The core modules are built with reliable connections, all CAN-B the opposite and in-between networks CGW benefits simple reboots.
Hope everything does stay well.
