New NA Map Version 11.0 is out

I looked last week and found v11 maps for North America is available. I have never gotten an OTA but have manually updated maps several now. Updated my car today without issue. No noticeable changes, but I assume that they added new roads and data.

How do you update manually?

I posted detailed instructions here. I suggest you do a full map update rather the select specific regions.

It is a great idea to update manually because speech data as far as I heard doesn't get updated via OTA plus OTA takes forever and it is a staged rollout. I am not sure if availability for manual update is also staged though.

Mr. Wolf, thanks for the alert about new maps being available. I just did the the manual download to a thumb drive. Also thanks for the link to your previous post as a reminder as to how to do the download. I'm off to plug my thumb drive with new maps on it into my car now!

Cool. Thanks!

But I do have a question, do you use the car's map or others (Google/Apple map)? It seems to me the traffic information on Google maps is more accurate (and it tells me whether there are cops ahead), so most of the time I use it for navigation.

I’ve downloaded the map but haven’t installed it yet. Since I make mostly short trips, does the car need to be driven while installing, and how long does it take to complete? I don’t want to plug in the stick and not allow sufficient time for completion - perhaps turning the car off mid install.

It takes about 40 minutes to complete. It implies you can turn the car off but with all the software issues reported, I prefer to let it complete uninterrupted.

I use both but prefer the built in navigation. If you open AA/ACP to start Waze and then go back to the built in nav you still get audio alerts from Waze. I'll periodically go back to Waze if I'm going over the speed limit so I can look ahead for police. I just like the integration the built in nav has with the HUD and the larger center screen better. When I went on a road trip, I mostly used the built in nav but I did try switching to AA and Waze while also switching the driver display to nav. The built in nav had my route and Waze was up just for alerts. Was quite effective actually. When using AA, I prefer Waze over Google maps. The built in nav is based on Google maps and I'm hoping that a future update will integrate more of the Google maps features to the built in nav.

Perhaps the update verifies its integrity before installing after downloading and does the same for when done installing?

Good idea, best of both worlds then.

So, I went off to plug my USB-C thumb drive into the car as I noted on my previous post. I expected a smooth upgrade to the new maps as it went very smoothly last time. After starting the car, I plugged in the USB drive and nothing happened. I figured I had a bad download. So I wiped the drive and did another download. Still nothing. OK, maybe a bad thumb drive. I took a new one, formatted it properly, did the download again and still nothing happened.

I'm not overly concerned about it, I'll try it again some other time. Perhaps someone had a similar experience and made a change to have better success?

Looks like you tried all the right things. How are you doing the download? The whole map or just specific regions?

One way to verify car can read your thumb drive is to put an MP3 on it and see if it will play. Not with map data, but with an otherwise empty drive. Also, when you put in the drive with the map update, did you try going to the software update setting and not see one available or did you just not see the popup on the main screen and stop there?

So, yes, I downloaded the whole map for US and Canada and verified that I downloaded 11.0 and that 10.2 is in the car.

Here's where it gets weird and I'll have to figure something out. After sticking the drive into the car, nothing happened map-wise, as far as updating goes. It is a freshly re-formatted and new USB-C drive. When I brought the drive back in the house and plugged back into my computer, I saw video files added! The car apparently thought I want to use this drive for the built-in dashcam.

So I once again reformatted the drive and downloaded the maps again. I turned off auto loop recording for the dashcam. I unplugged my dashcam drive. So, now dash cam is apparently off. I plugged the drive back in to see if maps would update. Nothing happened, so after a while I turned the car off and brought the drive back in. When I plugged it into my computer, it had added an empty "Videocam" folder. So something's going on that's not quite right. I'll keep messing around to see if I can eliminate this flaw and I'll gratefully accept anyone's suggestions.
See the weird folder added even though Dashcam is apparently turned off

My car adds that folder as well, but I never looked to see if it does on the map update drive. How long are you waiting before plugging in the map update drive? I usually wait until everything is started and all the notifications stop. That is usually about a minute, but I've never timed it. It shouldn't matter, but it's something you could try if you haven't already.

Good idea! When I drive to destination close to highways (my office for example) the built-in and Google usually find the same routes, otherwise the results can be different if there's heavy traffic, usually Google finds faster routes with more accurate ETAs.
I thought MB used Here Wego as Mercedes/BMW/AUDI purchased the company from Nokia years ago. No?

Ok, so I tried something different - previously I had exFAT and did it on my Mac. This time I tried it on a Windows PC and formatted the drive as NTFS.

And that worked! I only updated the UK region, it was quite fast, only took a few minutes. I'll go ahead and do the other regions now.

I hope this helps anyone else struggling with this!

Thanks for posting, W205C43PFL! That solved my problem as well. Changed my disk to NTFS and the maps loaded quickly and properly. It's odd that ExFat, that worked seamlessly for the previous update did not work for this one. But it's all good now!

While that may have solved your problem, I don't think it's the root cause. My thumb drive has always been formatted as exFAT and I've been able to update the car without issue using that drive. I just verified that my last update (mentioned in my initial post) was done with a exFAT formatted USB drive. It looks like both exFAT and NTFS work in the car since others were able to get it to work using NTFS. Maybe some cars don't like exFAT? I doubt it but it seems odd that others had issue with exFAT with at least one owner (me) does not. Maybe the download was corrupt and by chance it worked fine the last time that you just happened to use NTFS. 🤷‍♂️

Here are the relevant lines in the downloader log on my PC for my last update showing it recognized the exFAT drive and indicated it's good.

Could it be a Mac vs Windows thing or the newer freshup version of MBUX 3 changed it as well? Now I got curious...

I guess can both of you post your MBUX 3 NTG 8 version and we could perhaps compare?

I would seriously doubt it. The way a storage partition is formatted is not OS specific meaning exFAT is the same regardless of OS.

I would also doubt this since it's unlikely that MB would remove support for exFAT, but anything is possible. If anything, it would be more likely, but still doubtful, to drop support for NTFS. It's older and has less support across devices. NTFS is better for security and fixed disk storage devices that need to control access, but is not a typical choice for USB thumb drives that often do not need the extra overhead for a temporary and portable storage medium. The exFAT file system is the better choice for removable storage in most of the typical use cases.

My MBUX version is E262.3-4975 and has been the same since I bought the car in August.

BTW, I don't own a Mac, but I thought Macs cannot write to NTFS partitions. I didn't think they can even format a partition in NTFS. I could be wrong though.
