Exclamation Mercedes Benz of Manhattan marking up G-wagons now

It is official! I inquired about ordering a G-wagon from MB of Manhattan and was informed that there has been a policy change and unfortunately they are now marking up these vehicles. Approximately "5k" for the G550 and "10k" for the G63 with the 550s coming in by year's end and the G63 16-18 months from now. Quite an unfortunate turn of events as after doing some research it looks like in years past MB of Manhattan did genuinely do MSRP deals. Extremely disheartening since this is apparently the only factory store stateside and one can only assume that Daimler AG okayed the policy change? For reference, the local dealers near me in SoCal are currently asking 15k over on a G550 and 25-30k over on a G63.

10k isnt bad at all.drop in the bucket for that priced car. Search around... some desperate dealers may still sell for msrp for G63. I paid 15k for my 63 which is not bad from a large dealer in paramus. They should mark up these cars if demand is there... why not? plus it helps current owners resale values. once you establish the relationship and buy another G, you wont pay a markup. IMHO, the G’s are clearly priced too low especially the 63.

Interesting - I guess this implies that MBUSA and MBGmbH are fully buying into market adjusted pricing. They could simply jack-up the MSRPs by the same amounts, but realize that there's panache and mystique in selling a vehicle already grossly over-priced at bidding war premiums on top of MSRP. Maybe they're stilling trying to recover the losses from their misadventures with Chrysler.

I agree it helps with perceived demand if you are selling a $175k vehicle for $195k instead of selling a $195k vehicle for $195k. Makes me wonder if Manhattan will adjust everybody's order this way since they likely have a long wait list.

I don't blame dealers for marking things up as long as they are clear and straight forward. I wouldn't pay over sticker personally, but dealers are for profit after all.

At any rate it makes me appreciate my dealer even more.

I bought mine from MB Manhattan at msrp and would buy my next G from them again even with a slight mark up. Not because $10k is minimal, but the experience I had with them from previous purchases earned my trust. They're straight forward and honest people. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

While I was getting my flat replaced on the way back from Sedona at MB Vegas few months ago, there was a pretty scarcely optioned g63 with this tag...

This dealer likely reprinted the sticker to include an additional $50,000 "semiconductor shortage surcharge" and sold the truck while the ink was still wet.

Thumbs down G Wagon Markup

"They're straight forward and honest people."

You must be talking about another dealership! I ordered a G wagon and had a signed purchase order with a paid deposit. When it came in and I went to pay for it they told me, ugh, we now are adding a market premium. This is anything but straightforward and honest! This in fact is bait and switch. There was NEVER any mention of a premium. To the contrary, I only ordered from them because they are a factory store and touted the fact that they don't add any markup. Changing policy and not honoring the original comitment is dishonest.

This is abusive and sleazy and I will never do business with them again. I urge any shoppers to seriously consider any dealer but MB Manhattan.

I also ordered a G550 with Manhattan in January. I was told no mark up and my vehicle would arrive in 6 months. Welp July has come and gone, and no car. I won't even get one by year's end, so I am looking at 2023. My guess is someone came in willing to pay mark up and Manhattan just pushed those orders ahead of mine.

If MB Manhattan is truly an MBUSA owned franchise, and if you have legitimate buyer agreements and paid deposits, I think you have excellent legal standing to sue and win. If they're gonna screw with you, screw with them.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to look into this. I did give a deposit and sign a buyer’s order.

Think about it this way - had the truck been on-lot the day you ordered it and you drove it away, it would be a done deal. MB is entirely responsible for the time it took to deliver the vehicle, and can't use its incompetance to manipulate pricing to its advantage unless the buyer's agreement specifically allowed for market pricing adjustments. MB Manhattan wants you to walk away so it can legally re-price the truck to current market value and sell it to someone else. Get your attorney on it. A buyer's agreement and a paid deposit should be legally enforceable at the stated price.

Very likely. I ordered a G550 also in January but from my local dealership. It’s on the boat now.
They definitely pushed my order back a few extra months but they came through with a 21 for me as promised.
No mention of ADM yet so fingers crossed for another couple of weeks as they promised me MSRP back in Jan.

in a similar position with a G63, ordered prior to ADM‘s at this dealer. now wondering if you had any luck getting it for MSRP. I have a buyers order and emails, as well as deposit taken previously.

I did not have luck with the Manhattan dealer. When I shared I wouldn’t pay markup, I was told there were tons of orders in front of mine and they didn’t know when I’d get the car although when I ordered I was told 6 months. I ended up cancelling the order and getting my deposit back. I worked with a dealer in LA and was able to get a G63 without a markup. I am so surprised to hear dealers are still asking for markups?

Or their own misadventures with the new C63 or crappy hybrids/EVs.

May I ask which LA dealer you ordered from without a markup? I'm in the market for a '24. Thank you!

Isn't MB Manhattan owned by MB themselves?

I just don't get these mark ups as Autotrader has hundreds if not a thousand of them for sale at any moment. It's a fake market shortage just like housing.

I was a customer of Fletcher Jones in Newport Beach/Costa Mesa for 17, maybe 18 years. I’d say between personal purchases and referrals they moved 30 vehicles over the years. They asked for a market adjustment on a G55...that was the day they lost my business and all my referrals.

My current dealership knows I want a build allocation and will not pay above msrp. The ball is in their court...but I’m looking at 2 year wait 😬

I had a G550 negotiated with FJ, and after telling the SA to email me the sales contract and that I'd pick it up 2 days later, he came back with a $10K price increase. Can't print what I told him, but I wouldn't even buy an oil filter from them.

They are $20k over on the Magno Black. I think they have sold enough for the time being that MSRP may not be an option. PM your details and I can have my sales person call you. Then you could figure out if they are still willing to deal. The deal was on a Cardinal Red with Beige Interior, because they had two at the time. Not sure what you are looking for color wise.
