Hard to believe that the manufacturer who boasts of making the world's best automobiles is pinching euros by sourcing components from Asia. Then again, Daimler is still trying to recoup its $30 billion Chrysler acquisition loss.

Well to be fair Korean products aren't bad quality, thing is the Korean (?) company was changing the production process without MB's consent (from what I read).

My experience with Asian manufacturing is that you can find a shop able to do whatever grade of quality you've budgeted for. There are some top quality products coming Korea, China and SE Asia, but there is also plenty of sludge.

I never had products from Korea that were poor quality but that was my personal experience.

I had a 2021 G550 that had the fuel pump replaced, twice...

It left me stranded too many times I traded it off. Well now we know.

Or, it was a supply chain issue decision/solution. In other words, the decision or solution was related to supply chain issues. This means that Mercedes Benz either procures components from suppliers outside their normal network, or they cease to provide certain features. An example of this can be seen when they discontinued the start/stop function due to supply challenges. Additionally, as others have pointed out, Korea has significantly improved its standing in terms of manufacturing.

Manufacturers generally don't source materials outside their approved sources without extensive qualification and certification procedures, not to mention the contract negotiations tied to quantities, prices and delivery. My understanding of the auto start/stop function is that it's a feature car manufacturers use to goose their mpg ratings with the EPA, and once a vehicle gets EPA approval with auto start/stop, it can't be simply deleted, whether due to supply chain issues or customer dissatisfaction. Hence MB's dealers refusing to permanently disable it, even though it can be disabled by shifting into sport mode, or by purchasing an aftermarket OBD dongle to code it out.

When the profit per vehicle is high the manufacturer can offset the slightly increased average MPG caused by the elimination of the auto start/stop button by selling more electrics with subsidy. Cadillac had to do that with the elimination of Auto Start/Stop on the massively profitable Escalade last year and now Mercedes is doing it too. They would rather colect the $60K-$100K profit per G-Class while they can and then subsidize a $50,000 electric at the end of the year if needed.

When MB put its V8s on production hold 2 years ago, maybe it was the supply chain, maybe it was the mpg fleet average. My idea was every V8 sold had to be bought along with a GLA (lol).

In an interview if I recalled correctly on one of the reporting sites, MB stated that their supplier changed parts of the production process without notifying MB.

Anyone get theirs replaced yet under this recall? I just checked the NHTSA site and affected vehicle population went from 143,000 potentially affected vehicles down to 82,000 over two waves of notices. The second wave was supposed to be flagged on Oct. 27. My G received the first notice that it was affected (in August, I believe) that more info would be sent when a repair was available — it would also show up on the NHTSA website when I entered my VIN. Now it shows it's not under this recall.

One of my 2022 G63s’ fuel pump failed leading to stalling and the pump had to be replaced by the dealer and the recall was completed. The other one was a late 2022 build and is not affected by the recall. If you received the card from MB then your car is in the recall group.

I received the interim notice: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/202...3V445-4908.pdf and my VIN would show up as affected in both the NHTSA and MB recall sites. I never received a remedy is available notice and my VIN no longer shows up as being affected. On the NHTSA site, you can see the affected population as been significantly reduced (and about 2000 repairs completed). I sent a msg to MBUSA to see if they have more details.

Update from MBUSA is that even though my VIN doesn’t show up in the recall databases, from their side it’s “Pending” and for me to just keep an eye on those databases.

New recall just issued now includes all 2022-2024 G-Class, no remedy available yet so they are probably trying to source a new fuel pump manufacturer. Expect a letter in the mail soon.

Checked my 2023 G550 VIN both at MBUSA as well as NHTSA and both show no recalls for my VIN.

To check MBUSA by VIN:

To Check NHTSA by VIN:
