Wind Noise - 2023 G63

First, I love this truck (2023 G63)! I make up excuses to run errands and I don’t care that I only get 11 MPG. I’ve wanted one since I was a kid and finally found a decent spec and pulled the trigger a few weeks ago. It was a CPO with only 800 miles on it. The lady who purchased it went back to her GLS 600 Maybach. Got it back from PPF and we’re in love.

Now, I know that if I wanted a comfy ride, I should have just gotten a Range Rover. I’ve gone through some old threads and what perplexes me is that some or many people here have said they have NO wind noise on the highway. And some do have plenty of wind noise. I love this truck and wish I purchased it years ago but man. I have to find a way to address the wind noise. Where do I start? Should I start with the dealer closest to me (didn’t purchase with them)?

The wind noise starts around 45 mph and get exponentially louder and more noticeable into 70-85mph range. I know it won’t ever be silent considering the boxy design but it’s gotta be a little better than this. I can’t imagine German engineering not fixing this. Could it be the doors/door seals, the side view mirrors or maybe it’s the front windshield? Something must vary from truck to truck for some to have noise and others to have none.

Yeah the wind noise is really noticeable at first especially if you are coming from an aerodynamic vehicle. However, after a bit you get used to it. I don’t even notice it anymore tbh even when switching between my G and my wife’s BMW.

Not sure if there is much you can do about it. Some have taken various extremes to reduce the noise (see thread below).

Drive a Jeep Wrangler once a week, and the G will compare like a sensory deprivation room (lol).

That's funny! I remember driving a Wrangler years ago and I got out thinking, "no way in hell can I deal with that noise".

Appreciate the feedback! I don't disagree, I just feel like German engineering would have resolved this by now considering how specific they are in everything else. I know it's a true utility vehicle, but call me crazy for thinking it can achieve both.

It’s just a function of the design. It’s quiet around town but on the highway it’s very loud. I guess you could try to pay somebody to put sound insulation in but at the end of the day we are all driving mobile washing machines around.

I get a noise at the same speeds, which I think is the driver window pain shaking. You can sort or re-create the sound by moving the window pain with your fingers.

I have had door seals replaced.

is this the sound you are getting?

I've seen this mentioned a few times in the forums. I really haven't noticed it and I am routinely hauling *** to work in the morning.

I just picked up a 2021 with 7K miles. It had a terrible wind noise from the passenger side front. Testing with paining tape revealed that it was an issue with the decorative gutter that runs down the front edge of the passenger side of the windshield. I cut a section of rope approximately 1/8 in diameter and tucked it in the opening of the gutter. I also stuffed a small section of foam in the bottom of the gutter piece- neither is visible. This basically eliminated the abnormal noise. I may need to have the dealer order new trim piece, remove old, and reseal and replace. Any other suggestions?

I think my 2020 suffers from noise from the A pillar trims but also in and around the doors, because they seem to sit proud of the B & C pillars around the waistline and Im not convinced they seal fully. I say that because crosswinds seem to bring noise into the cabin rather than just head on noise when driving at speed. One time my wife sitting in the back thought a window was slightly down when we drove through crosswinds.

I put several layers of seal rejuvenator on the seals in the summer but they weren’t that dried out anyway to be honest. I think the door catches can be adjusted so will get that done when the vinyl wrap is removed.

Id like to investigate the A pillar external trims, how are they removed please?

Thanks
Carl

New driver here. I feel the mirror on driver side vibrates due to wind at high speeds. Rest all seems to be fine in my 2024 G63

Your vehicle is wrapped and you're removing it? Why?
