Torque limit of the AMG 5speed tranny?

........I might be approaching the torque limit of the of the AMG 5speed transmission, but I am not sure. Does anyone know what the limit is? Further, is this an electronically set limit and if so can it be changed?

..........also I imagine that the torque limit will be expressed in crank LBFT by mercedes. So what is an appropriate drive train loss percent for 4wheel drive truck? This will help me convert my numbers to crank figures to see if I need to worry. Thanks.

Ted

I think all 55K engines are mated to the W5A900 transmission. That's certified for 900 Nm (664 ft-lb). The V-12s use the W5A1000 (738 ft-lb). And yes, that's at the input shaft.

I know the TCU of the W5A1000 is involved in preventing overtorque situations. The Renntech ECU flash for the V-12 engines requires that the TCU be flashed as well. I don't know what the W5A900 TCU does.

...............Thank you. That was exactly what I needed to know. Does anyone flash the TCU of the W5A900?

I'd give Renntech a call, either in Florida or one of their local dealers. If anyone does it, it would be them. They might also have some information on how far you can push that transmission. The W5A1000 is also physically hardened and the 900 Nm version would obviously be at risk at a lower torque than the 1000 Nm one. I think that Renntech also has some experience in hardening the tranny, but I don't know if they use W5A1000 parts or what.

I have yet to dyno the car myself, ive only had it a week. I have 2 somewhat conflicting figures. The most recent is a dynojet reading 572 but I have a Mustang Dyno with 708 at the wheels from last year but I think those were done at 91 octane, i am getting that data shortly. I plan on getting it on a dyno within the next week or two.

........I agree with you about the inconsistency of dyno numbers. 708 rear wheel torque is amazing. Yours is a Cl600 with ECU/TCU flashes, so that figure might be correct.

.........My G55 reportedly has 600rear wheel torque which at 25% drive train loss places the torque at the crank at 750. I say reportedly because the dyno was done by the tuner. I am yet to re-dyno it myself. The most important numbers are at the drag strip. However I am interested in these crank HP torque numbers now in order not to exceed the torque limit of the automatic transmission......which it appears I have exceeded. I don't know if I should worry.
