DIY K & N Drop in Filter on GL550
Over the weekend I just finish my first Mod on the NEW GL550. I was able to drop in a K&N Filter! Was able to feel the difference right away compare to stock!

Also updated the Factory Xeon HID to PIAA 6000k and swap out some factory bulb to super white! Upgraded the reverse bulb, High Beam and Fog Light!

Nice truck and interesting mods. I know how satisfying it can be to perform mods on one's vehicle; I've modified my motorcycle multiple times, but never my cars. Would you please elaborate on what you feel with the K&N and what the PIAA 6000K have over the factory HID lights? My truck is exactly like yours, minus the mods, and I'm curious. Also, with all the new bulbs, is there a concern they might burn hotter than stock and melt the polycarbonate covers? Sorry for the twenty questions.

thanks fo the warning! I had the K&N on my wife's e500 for quite sometime and also on my old x5!
Luckily haven't had any issue at all.
As for the PIAA 6000K, I also had it install on the e500 not a problem so far!
When HID are at 6000k the output are White, Stock are a bit yellow!

I have replaced all the oem filters with K&N in all my vehicles, new and old, and never ruined any sensors since 1996.
Unless, like it was said, you apply too much oil after cleaning.

I too must disagree with LKChris:
I too have used K&N filters on multiple cars and never had a problem over a number of years and sometimes had great gains..especially on vehicles with blowers/turbos...but on some cars just got a better intake sound and no real difference in performance. Still, never regretted the purchase.
As said, I think people get carried away with oiling the filter and of course that will create problems....
Enjoy your GL!

Welcome, "Newbie!" There are some very powerful and useful "search" tools available on these forums. Using them, I found this.
(Or, if you prefer the whole URL, https://mbworld.org/forums/2605888-post6.html)
There you'll see a PDF you can download regarding reseting the computer.
Good luck!

Do you guys really experience and feel a performance difference? Seems like the percent difference would be so small (if any) that it would not be discernable? I also did the K&N filter on my ML320, but honestly could not tell a difference.
MBW211 - do you notice anything on your 550?

Thanks for all your comment
The only noticeble different was the shifting of the gears! You will notice that with K & N Install the up shift of first, second and third gear become more responsive! (Which occur on my wife's e500 as well)
I also notice a louder and more aggressive intake noise when take off! Since GL is a heavy car so it is very hard to notice any increase of HP if any!
as far as for the bulb it actually do not match the stock HID, that is another reason why I decided to change most of the light out to match the PIAA i installed!
I am think of putting on a pair of H & R 12-15mm Spacer for the front and 20mm Spacer for the rear for the next upgrade!
