Question New 350 Oil Change Question

Hi Everyone,

I'm going to be taking delivery of a new GL350 in the next couple of months. I have to admit that it is an eagerly anticipated event.

My question is ... Many mechanical/technical types advocate changing the oil on a new engine pretty much right away or within the first couple of thousand km to keep the little metal bits and filings from manufacture from circulating in a new engine. They seem to want these evil bits purged to keep them from damaging internal engine parts and causing premature wear. Especially important for those of us who want to keep our vehicles for a long time. Is this a recommended practice?

Has anyone had this conversation with their mechanic or MB tech?

Thanks very much for your collective thoughts and wisdom.

I'll let Fab (the real expert) chime in, but I believe there is a special break in oil installed and you are supposed to run it to the 1st interval before changing it.

I put a lot of miles on my GL and went through the normal recommended maintenance.

I did that on my ML320 but skipped on my subsequent E350 and GL350, all BTC. I did the ML320 at 5k and the service adviser really recommended against it...

No break oils are used, Mobil 1 from the Factory.

Here's a thread with a quote from the factory guy that says it's different.

I think the tip to check oil on delivery, and to check during break-in are very good - however I would wait for the full 10K before doing the change out - but thats just me.

Keep the beat !

A gaggle of MB's
Correct - special OE formulation of Mobil One specific to new engine assembly - have no chemistry detail of what they take out or what extra they add-in.

Nothing gained whatsoever in breakin by changing out prior to 10K interval except to make certain old school owner's feel better..

Thanks!

Thank you all very much for the discussion folks. Jim and Fab, you have been especially helpful. I'll get with the times and go by the book.

My approach

I have a new Sprinter with the same engine and did first change at half the recommended interval of 10k. By changing at 5k, 10k, and 15k it has no oil consumption issues at all. Do the same with my GL350.

Most importantly is using good oil, I use Mobil 1 ESP formula M.
