Starter recall - anyone have this done yet?
As stated in the title, this starter recall was issued back in spring of this year, which applied to most GLC's and other Mercedes platforms with auto start feature. So I'm wondering if any GLC owners out there have it done already? If so, how was your experience?
I have yet to receive any notice from Mercedes, however it's showing as pending/incomplete when I entered my VIN on Mercedes' webpage. Anyhow, the work calls for retrofitting a fuse on the starting current limiter to prevent overheating on the starter. Look for NHTSA recall # 17V-114 for more info.

His response was, "still awaiting parts. No idea when they'll be available."

I had mine done already at MB of Winston-Salem in NC. It only took about 30 minutes and then I was out again.

Not the starter, there's a fuse added to the battery area, on the cable coming off the current limiter unit to the starter.
There's multiple threads on this all over the forum. Parts are coming out in stages, and owners will be notified as such. We tend to have most of the parts in stock and address it as cars come in for service anyway. A large portion of the ones I've checked recently, don't have the affected type of limiter installed, and don't even need the fuse installed. The recall starts as an inspection only, and if it has the one style limiter, we add the fuse.

Accomplished on my GLC yesterday. Not a big deal. Meant to correct a safety defect that most likely would never happen.

So by how you've described it, it seems the actual work simply involves the addition of an inline fuse holder (of sort) to the starter wire near the battery?

I will try to link the recall info on monday when i'm back at work. The bulletin has pictures and more info.
In essence, the car has a current limiter, which is a large resistor, that handles the starter power for the first .2 seconds of starting. This added resistance lowers the draw of the starter, keeping the voltage from dropping too much and causing issues with other systems. In exchange, the resistor gets hot. As long as the engine actually starts, it will never be an issue. As per the bulletin, if the engine is mechanically blocked from turning, this resistor will get very hot due to current passing through repeatedly and no actual starting of the engine happening. The fuse we install on the current limiter line makes sure it would blow and disconnect in this situation, rather than allow it to get hot enough to melt things. That's all it is.

Thanks for sharing this info, ItalianJoe1.
Good to know that the actual work is not too involved and can be done quickly. Please post the official bulletin when available.

This is the current bulletin. Be advised, it can be updated/modified at any time, but this shows the gist of it and what cars it applies to.
