2024 GLC43 Jerky Transmission

Have owned my car for about 7 months now and it has just under 7k miles. The transmission has been rough since day one especially when it’s shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. It has also gotten confused on several occasions: hesitating for long periods and not knowing which gear to choose or jerking to a stop like it was about to stall and shut the engine off. I realize the MCT transmission is tuned for more aggressive driving but this doesn’t seem normal. The car behaves like a person learning to drive a manual transmission. Wanted to give the car time to break in and learn my driving style before taking it to the dealership with complaints but now at 7k miles the car should be properly broken in. Dropped it off this morning and the dealership has identified the problem but does not have a solution yet. Anyone else experienced this?

Indeed the transmission is a bit jerky and sometimes seems like someone is driving stick shift for the first time

There's a known issue in the 43 models with the MCT. It came to light during the unveil of the C43 and AMG is supposedly working on a software fix, but as far as I know the fix is still not available yet and it's been over a year already I think. Currently, the temporary fix involves resetting the adaptations, which is likely what your dealership is going to do. The issue only occurs with particular driving styles and will come back. What happens is that with certain driving styles the adaptation cycle skips a step or two that results in jerky shifts. I haven't seen explained exactly what specific driving style is causing this, but it's probably why it's taking them so long to fix it.

The C43 and GLC43 are the first application of the MCT with anything other than the V8 and it seems AMG is struggling to make it work with the M139 engine. I recently drove the W206 C63 in Germany. I love the MCT in my 2019 C63, but it was terrible in the new C63. Same engine as the C/GLC 43 plus the hybrid caboodle.

Yes, the MCT is inherently rawer and rougher due to using a clutch instead of a torque converter and if you don't know what you are doing with your throttle inputs it can buck like a car with a manual transmission. But what's going on with the MCT in these 4-cylinder models is not that. Just to set your expectations, though, the MCT is not the smoothest thing for city and stop&go driving. You'll have to modulate the throttle to make it smooth. I drive my C63S coupe mostly in manual mode, but that's also where it was really terrible in the new C63. Every shift was delayed and it shifted unnecessarily harsh in Race mode. Only drove it in Sport+ and Race, though.

Update

Just got the car back. They did a control unit update n15/15. Also a transmission adaptation and a valve and wet clutch flush. Then they carried out a second adaptation. I did ask my service tech about the software update and was told it wasn’t out yet. Car seems to be driving smooth so far and is much better than before. Will update you guys after a couple of weeks of driving.

Jerky Transmission

I have had this issue since picking up the car from new in June. I had the vehicle looked at and it was with the dealer yesterday who re-set all the adaptions and there has been a significant improvement in the quality of the shifts. In talking to the service team this is a common issue in the new generation of 43’s.

Thanks for the tip...
So what do I mention next time I go to the dealership , that car is jerky or reset the adaptions ? Will they know what I'm talking about ?

Yes, I am pretty certain that they will if you explain the issue and suggest that this may be a solution.

I just picked up my GLC43 less than a week ago. I was told by the dealership within minutes of getting to there that with this being an AMG model, and a new one for 2024, the transmission may feel wonky. I didn't really believe them initially, but I've since put around 700kms on the car in like 3 days and can confirm, it does feel like someone learning to drive manual for the first time (like it's been mentioned my a few others). I found it really noticeable when I use the adaptive cruise distronic (or whatever it's called when the car keeps it within a certain distance from the car in front if it) when it starts accelerating after a full stop, if the car in front of me is accelerating rather quickly. In those situations, I found that if I just accelerate to a reasonable speed, it will have no issue shifting up/down from there and it doesn't feel as bad. I think with it being the new engine/transmission configuration, like it's already been mentioned by others, it's bound to have some issues. I hope it can be either a software thing that the car can update over air, or maybe something that can be changed in the transmission itself that'd be covered by Mercedes.

Good to hear there is finally a software update out to fix it, for those who need further improvements if the update doesn't help, request for a standstill adaptation but only do so if the update doesn't solve the issue.

Is this related to only the 2024 43s? My 2020 has the dreaded acceleration gap and it's downright dangerous at times. It's one of the reasons I'm not buying Mercedes again. Anyone know if it can be fixed on 2020s?

It was a bit less in the V6 (as I had one ) but my 2024 glc43 is horrible and indeed dangerous . I hope there's a fix else I'm also done with MB.

In the previous gen GLC 43's defense, that had a TCT and as discussed these have an MCT. MCT is just like a manual transmission but controlled by a computer, while the TCT is your traditional automatic. I am not saying it is acceptable to be jerking like this especially if you are not driving spiritually and in comfort instead. I thought updates are already out to fix this or mitigate the issue though?

Too funny at one point even my wife was asking why I was driving in a manual mode

It does seem like it : ) We just need to figure out a way to teach the computer to drive the "manual transmission" properly, this is done through updates and the standstill adaptation and/or forced adaptation mentioned, really hope there is an update out already or very least an update available soon.

Are you talking about this? https://mbworld.org/forums/glc63s-gl...-43-coupe.html

It is possible that, that was caused by the oil pump solenoid switching from low pressure to normal pressure mode, more on it here: https://mbworld.org/forums/w212-amg/...solenoids.html

For what it is worth, I have it unplugged.

Sorry to hear about these issues, as the update is available soon or already, installing it might mitigate it.

I was told the dealer just reset the tranny (back to learning mode) or whatever that means but not sure if they updated anything .
Will see if it changes anything

I am having the exact same problem. I took my car in at about 1000 miles. Dealer couldn’t find the problem and told me the car was still learning. Problem is in Sports mode only and seems to be improving .

Same with mine, new 27/08/24 in with AMG Techs again today doing some more tests. The AMG techs initial reaction was "It's a characteristic of the car" they adjusted the transmission to fit the power delivery
more, it was better for a while but returned to really Jerky after anothe 1000 miles or so, hence back with them today to do some tests MB wanted doing we will see what they say but I suspect I will get the same answer that i's just how they are,
If that is the case it\s the worst automatic transmission of any car on the planet..

Still fun to drive but have to be aggressive constantly but that time where you want some Sunday driving it disappoints even in comfort mode.
