I HATE those cables. It really should be wireless. Every time I fiddle with the cable or I see the half screen I get pissed. Everything else works so well, is designed beautifully, and then you have these **** cables and half of the screen isn't used. Ugh!

If you think Apply CarPlay is bad, Android Auto is worse. Not only it doesn't have full screen and wireless support, it also doesn't work with the two touchpad controls so you have to use the touch screen to navigate.

I tried that and still had issues. Did you connect it to BT as well or only the USB cable?

You should only need the usb cable to get carplay to work. Do you see the car play icon on the top left corner of the screen by your profile name? If you’ve tried everything, I’d say it boils down to software issues. When I connect my cable, I will have a spinning wheel and it would say it’s connecting and never actually connect. There’s still a lot of bugs that need to be worked out.

I used CarPlay with Google Maps on my recent 1,000+ mile drive to and from Canada. It worked well, but it would often take forever to start, or would sometimes not start at all. I *think* it was doing much worse when the car was parked outside in the cold. Anyone else experience this?

I notice I have many more glitches when the vehicle is cold (as in below freezing temps) than when it is parked indoors where it is warm.
Also, FU2 seems to have slowed the response time of Carplay, especially when Carplay loads.

Yes. That's the issue already discussed in this thread, which is super annoying. No solution yet. I do not think it's related to cold weather. It's just MBUX software issues.

In my observation, it is definitely related to cold weather. I was at 5F (-15C) and it was almost inop. Every time it got warmer, things improved. Go figure...

I'm going to try a wireless CarPlay adapter to see if that works. Does anyone know if the USB-C port in the armrest works for CarPlay, or is it only the one in the cupholder. I find the cupholder one is very badly placed because if you put a USB-C cable in there it interferes with the ability to use the cupholder as a cupholder.

Agreed, the GLE CarPlay USB-C location is bad even when just using the cable. AFAIK, the left port next to the tray is the only CP connector. Will confirm shortly.

After a delay, our wireless CarPlay adapter is finally on its way form China (carplay2air). According to reviewers (also on this forum), it seems to perform well unlike some of the crap adapters on Amazon. Hoping for a better experience...

I installed carplay2air in my Porsche and it is working flawlessly there. I will test it on the GLE soon. Ordered the USB-C to USB3.1 adapter.

It is unfortunately only the port in the cupholder that is a data port and that is a very poor decision on MB's behalf especially because wireless CarPlay is not supported.
On the GLB, they have a data port in the center console which IMHO much better. So even if you have the carplay2air dongle it will still suck

How could they be so stupid? The E class also has a second CarPlay port in the center console.

In my Porsche there is a second CarPlay port in the back seat center console so I have the wireless adapter in the back and the wired cable in the front center console in case I want to plug it in for charging.

No idea really, wondering myself why they would have such inconsistencies between models they just recently refreshed with MBUX.
Another example is where the GLC still has the old cluster setup with the stick-up screen in the center while even the A class has the large screen....

GLC is a facelift only which limits retooling. Key is that the tech is updated...

I tried using the CarPlay2Air adapter on the 2020 GLE450. It did not work.

Not sure if the CarPlay adapters is not compatible with MBUX (they don’t list the 2020 GLE as one of the compatible cars, or if it is the Dongle I used not being compatible, or the fact that I previously installed it in my Porsche and it needs to be reset before installing in the Mercedes.

Let me know how it goes for you.

Bummer!
Did some checking an read the same in Europe for an A-class. Company says the don’t support CarPlay with USB-C. They didn’t mention MBUX. I asked them a response.
Should have ours next week...

Yes the USB-C port may be the problem.

It's a shame. I figured out a way to conceal the adapter without losing one of the cupholders. You could get a custom car electronics shop to remove the 12V adapter and put the CarPlay adapter in there behind the flap. That would have been an elegant solution.

I tried one similar adapter called Carlinkit a month ago. I bought directly from Taobao, and they shipped it from China. I encountered the same error message. I chatted with the customer service, and they said that the adapter doesn’t support MBUX. I then tried using the adaptor on my friend’s 2019 Toyota RAV4, and it worked perfectly. My friend was so excited and I was so jealous.

Now that 2021 E-class will be using MBUX, I wonder how Mercedes will explain to its customers the new and better operating system does not have fullscreen CarPlay while 2016 Comand version could.

I'd much rather them solve all the stupid connection issues first. Don't know about the rest of you, but I usually find myself having to disconnect and reconnect the cable for it to work. I connect it, the "Starting carplay" screen shows up and then just disconnects, or won't open Carplay. Very rarely does it work on first connection.

The same thing happens to me too. Can be pretty frustrating.

Have you tried buying a new cable?
