Top speed on GLE 53? 112 mph???

Just ordered this and after looking at magazine reviews of the 2021 I was shocked to see several sources mention 112mph as the top speed. Is this for real? Im hoping its 155 and limited to 112 for break in or something. Please tell me this is wrong.

I think it's 155, and 112 may be it's quarter mile speed?

I think trap speed was 103 mph. Mid 13’s for the quarter which is ok for a boat of a car. I hope u right.

I highly doubt they limited it to just 112mph. However, if that is true a simple tune will fix this and then you will gain more power as well.

112 mph limiter on a AMG GLE53 is unacceptable. Main reason I purchase AMG models is so I don't have to tune it.

Although this is my wifes baby buggy and she will never see over 100, all my cars have top speed 180+. However i can theoretically see the 112 limit being a safety issue on the highway if s high speed evasive maneuver is necessary. I dont plan on abusing speed limits. Again this would be so rare it would be like winning the lottery but people dont buy cars for reasons much stupider than that

Good point, however I've never heard of other similar AMG or 'Sport' Mercedes with 112 limiter. This is news to me. Is the W166 GLE43 or the GLC43 that low? Usually it's a tire rating that dictates that but any rating better than H (130 MPH) or better achieves a higher rating.

I can live with 130 which is crazy fast for a vehicle of this size. I emailed the manager

@Pete400 You mention "several sources." I have been following these cars and read lots of articles, as well as tech analysis and Daimler releases.
I have never seen the "112mph" number until I read your post. Could you reveal your sources? Perhaps they were looking at fitted tire speed ratings?

The real number is 155 mph.
It's likely that it's electronically limited, and as a few have posted above, that's a maximum tire rating, and it's historically based.
In the late 80's, there was a "top speed war" going on between M-B, BMW, Porsche and the VW Group (Audi). They finally agreed (called the Gentleman's Agreement) to limit top speed to 250kph (155mph) and put limiters on their cars. It was based on max speed ratings of tires available at that time. (Yes there are tires with higher ratings now, and we now have a different speed rating scheme so it's hard to compare speed ratings from the 80's to today's ratings.) It was also designed to mollify the TUV, the German Safety consortium that was rattling its sabers over safety concerns.
Yes, some 80's cars were capable of 155+. I worked at a BMW Dealership at the time, and a customer of mine had his 1987 750IL (V12) de-limited was able to hit 172.

I personally don't have much use for going over 130, but 112 could be an issue. It might depend on whether it was a "soft" or "hard" limit.

This all started from a YouTube review I posted which Pete replied to:

Thanks for your source. I think C&D has it wrong. 103 in the quarter mile but only 112 top speed? Maybe Mercedes does that with Press Cars to keep the public safe.....
And AFAIK, the 53 will do 155, but only the 63 does 186.

the 53 couldnt do 186 with a rocket up its ***🤣 thats why i told him to call amg
i had the same thought about limiting press cars to 112. But these cars had the brake/suspension upgrade and summer tires so not sure why they would do that 🤷🏻‍♂️

The guy in the video also said it had 295 rear tires. He should have checked his sources.
I don't think it had the upgraded suspension, because of no red calipers.
I also don't think those rear tires looked like 315s, either. I wonder if somebody at the dealership swapped tires.
Or worse yet, that's what they're shipping now.
The whole video was painful to watch, though!

The tires on that car were Yokohama and they aren’t listed for the GLE 53 sizes or speed rating. I’m guessing the car was an early build for Press events and Demo’s. AFAIK in the US, Mercedes 22” Cross Spoke wheels (video) only come with the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S High Performance tires, 110Y XL. Why waste money putting a 186mph rated tire on a car with a max speed of 112? My 2020 GLE 450 with H rated tires was not limited to 112!
As I said earlier I have gone past the 112 mph...maybe about 115 for a short burst nearing the end of the recommended break in mileage of 1,000. In a week I will be able to take it up a notch if Mother Nature gives me some clear roads.
I travel in 4 of the least populated states in the US and there is almost no place safe to drive 100 for more than a very short distance. So I’m wondering why top speed is an issue anyway. The ISP has ticketed several people at 100+ near Boise, ID & at that speed you normally will get a reckless driving citation.

I use V rated winter tires because the construction gives crisper handling. Even though I never expect to drive 149mph on snow
The tires also give better heat dispersion when towing, and stronger sidewall construction tends to ward off damage better.
Summer tires, too - they're just better tires.

I saw that article before I ordered mine and didn't believe it. Big bad AMG being beat out by a Prius. I hope an explanation comes out soon.

Now they dont know what steering wheel you get with the heated option. I dont want the schoolbus one or the alcantara one. Amg tech was flip flopping. Gonna cancel it and get a cayenne i think. 😔 thats too bad i was excited for some GLE action

Audi and the RS6 was just as bad with the heated wheel changes. Bizarre that this is an issue.

My AMG sales advisor sent me this: It says 155 for my GLE53 AMG with 22s and Yoko summer perf. tires, 325 rears and 285 fronts.

Dealer is wrong...that’s not correct on the 130 limit. My build included the 21” Conti Cross Contact, MO, 110V XL A/S tires. (My Dealer had a GLE 53 with Michelin Primacy Tour that were also 110V)
I found a dry, lonely stretch of Freeway today in Utah and had mine to 134. It was still pulling hard when I backed off of the throttle. My radar detector has GPS & the speed syncs exactly with my car except for it obviously lags a little when accelerating. At 90 both read 90.
On a side note the car is extremely stable at high speed...except for telephone poles whizzing past it feels about the same at 90-130MPH.

this just confirms my lack of confidence with the dealer info
