2020 GLE 350 Windshield Wavy / Warped Issues?
Hey everyone,
I am in need of thoughts and wisdom.
i purchased a 2020 GLE 350 on Saturday for my wife. Out of warranty. Roughly 50K miles.
Love the car but noticed within 24hr after purchase that something odd was going on with the windshield. It almost appears “warped” or “wavy.” When driving, everything appears distorted. It isn’t egregiously noticeable at first, but is not drivable long term. It is giving my wife headaches and causing dizziness. It’s bad.
Has anyone else experienced this? The dealership quoted me $2950 to replace the windshield. That was a surprise.
any insight is appreciated. Thank you.

Maybe you can start following a bunch of construction trucks and hope for a windshield chip so insurance covers a replacement.

you can just have the windshield replaced if it that bad out of pocket. but be forewarned its not cheap on these. if it was my wife's car, I'd just replace the windshield.

I’m hesitant to replace the window for $3,000 in fear that the one they put in will have the same problem.

That doesn't sound right for an OEM windshield. I would wonder if it's been treated or coated with something? How does water react on the glass surface? If it's hydrophobic (beads), there may be a coating that's distorting the clarity.

Wow, they quoted you $3K? I'd find another glass shop to do it, like Safe Lite or some other glass company that does Mercedes. Last time I checked that windshield is less than $1000 on its cost.

Make sure no one added aftermarket tinting to the windshield.
Safelite charged my insurance company $1800.00 for a new OEM HUD compatible windshield last year.

OEM windshield is pretty expensive compared to generic one, more so with HUD option, and windshield replacement requires camera calibration also.

There's OE and there's OEM. Original equipment manufacturers (OEM's) may make different grades of glass.
OE glass is the Original Equipment, so make sure your glass is OE, not just OEM.
It always requires calibration.

Good point. Polarized lenses can cause distortions in some car windows, especially if tinting is involved.

Interesting, did not know about this, I thought it was etched inside the glass during the manufacturing process. Just to be clear and if we are on the same page, we are talking about the "Carl Benz" signature which was later replaced by simply "Mercedes" right?

I could swear that my windshield invoice showed a separate part number, when I go look at the glass, it certainly feels like it's etched.
I'll see if I can find the invoice. I'm already on my fifth windshield in 40,000 MI. I tend to avert my eyes anymore.
(The pitting you see here occurred on the trip home from the most recent windshield installation. Buzz Kill.)(Major road for gravel hauling to the next big city, and 30 mi of 40 mph construction the last 2 years.)

Yes, that's what I was talking about, BUT I think I'm wrong.

So should I be concerned if the signature on my windshield is Karl Bends??
Actually the signature on both my 2020 GLS and 2015 S550 is Carl Benz. When I had the windshield replaced on the S550 in March, even though the installer (which was recommended by the dealer) bought the glass from the dealer, I made sure it had the Carl Benz signature before it was installed.

man, I only have like 3-6 rock chips in my windshield. And was thinking about just having them fix but didn't want to take the chance of messing something up. Yours looks sand blasted compared to mine. I think I wait to replace it a while longer.
