How often do you change oil of V6 diesel GLE?

On the internet there are numerous forum topics stating that this engine "loves clean oil" which is valid for any engine. Producer states that oil chage should be done every 20 000km or every year/whatever comes first/. In the same time there are articles for Bluetec engines describing the high temperature this engine works at and therefore the fast change in oil properties due to this. I don't know if 2017 GLE 350d is Bluetec, it should be although the Bluetec logo is present only on ML-s with the V6 diesel engine. As far as I know the engine is unchanged in model generation W166 which concerns both ML and GLE. It is clear that the periods between oil changes depends also on the manner of driving, stop&go short distance traffic or highway mileage, and my previous car BMW X3 was showing approximately the next oil change according to the rate of amortization of the oil. Please share your opinion about the issue, the oil/and filters/change price at the official dealer in my country is about 800Euro/$1000 and it matters if I change it every 10 000 or every 20 000 km.

I can appreciate the fact that you like social forums and all the information that provide, however the last place I would go to is a forum for lubrication information on my vehicle. I tend to go to the source,ie the manufacturer and what is their recommendation on lubricants and changes----what have they stated in their\your manual.

Now if you don't agree with them, that's fine. We all have free choice!

I totally agree with you. The reason I started this thread is that according to the things already written in this forum I felt like the only one here who's gonna change the oil as the manufacturer claims instead of two times sooner.

The 800 euros or 1000 $ sounds like a full annual service (check this check that crap).

The actual oil and filter should cost you $350 if you are in NA , in EU it will be more but only slightly (cost of labour can not be more that 125.00 per hr).

I follow the 20k as per dealer recommendation. It is your choice to do these changes in shorter intervals. Do not forget these new GLE/ML generation cars are not the old 240Ds that would last 1,000,000kms with proper oil changes. Once the electronics start to go south on these new cars, then it is time to move on to a new car. At least that is my take.

cheers

Yes - in UK (and Euro) the interval is 20K km ((12,500 miles) - here in the US it is recommended 10K miles (16K km) and no later than 12.500 miles (your 20K km).

So that you know - service interval by time is 12 months (14 months on the outside).

In all areas - "servioe" encompasses more technically than oil/fluids change - oil can be accomplished in 20/25 minutes - and shop time for A service is about 1 3/4 - 2 1/4 hrs.

So.. it is not uncommon at all in UK/EU to hit service by time - rather than by km's.

I hope I have been of some help - keep the beat !

Thanks for your opinion on the topic, my conclusion is there are few members here believing/or just posting/ that oil should be changed much more frequently than stated and this creates the impression everybody does it like this.

I understand that "old school" perspective - frankly when I have my oil changed - I "feel" my ride is running smoother - intelligent minds can generate convincing self-illusions - don't you agree ?

Back to basics - Mercedes is on the hook for warranty repair - if a earlier oil change would extend engine life and engine reliability - don't you think Mercedes themselves would recommend earlier oil change ?

FYI, Oil and filter for GLE350d from Mercedes is $100.00 USD here.

I do normal services at the dealer plus a 7500KM oil change after myself.

If you're planning on keeping it past warranty...don't run 15000km or 20000km intervals IMHO!. or...buy an extended warranty.

The manual also does not mention much about changes to this when towing (could not find it anyways).

If the Mercedes engineers say that an oil change once a year or every 10K miles is enough, I'm sure that it is enough. I remember reading about a study where they kept the oil for 100000 KM by using a special filter system.

I stand corrected. Fabb is right, I did my oil change at 16000kms (just checked my records).
