I really don't think you can. You can only copy to the car's interenal hard drive via CD slot.

Why not just plug the USB drive into the USB port and be done with it?

I've copied CDs to the hard drive before on my '16 400. Is that what you mean? I don't remember how I did it but I know have about 4-5 of my daughters music on there. I'll try to look later today. I do remember that it has changed a little bit, fo example you cannot listen to the CD now as it records (if I remember correctly). I will also say it's a pain in the butt to find the music you downloaded though and get back to it everytime. I haven't found an easy way to do that yet.

Thanks a lot Rick for your reply. The only issue with using the USB is that it gets in the way so I can't put a water bottle or other things near it. I also tried to copy from a CD but it did not work.
there is no option that appears that tells you "copy" or "REC".

How to copy from Audio CDs

Thanks for your reply.
yes, I am just trying to copy the music I have on a USB or a CD on the car's hard drive so I don't have to bring or use the CDs every time. You sure it worked for you? my model is GLE 400 , 2016.
Will be grateful if you could let me know how to copy from a CD to the car. Thanks in advance.

You can't. You can "rip" CDs to the HDD. For those unfamiliar with the process, ripping is converting a CD audio track to another digital format, such as mp3, WMA, FLAC, etc. Your car rips (converts) CDs to mp3 format. There are various free programs that accomplish the same thing using a computer.

CDs have really become obsolete, especially for use in vehicles. Why carry around a stack of CDs that only provide a few dozen songs, when you can have thousands of tracks in a package the size of a thumbnail?

You're referring to the "old" style USB drives. The newer "low profile" USB drives are made specifically for autos, laptops, etc. They don't protrude out to the same degree as the older style.

More details can be found below. See pics as well.

When it comes to design, either of these will work. But take it from me, when determining capacity, more is ALWAYS better. You will inevitably outgrow the smaller drives. I started with 32 GB, graduated to 64 GB and finally ended up needing 128 GB.

agree. didn't pay attention to capacity. just that staples has low profile Lexar drives, usually in stock. ron
