Garage Door Opener?

Garage Door Opener?
Just picked up our 2014 GLK250. Really like the car, boy was I surprised to find out it didn't have a garage door opener. Dealer says can't be added, anyone have any information or ideas?
Thanks George

I knew I wasn't getting one, so just using one of the small Stanley ones and keep it in the storage bin with sliding top. Same with Nav package. Garmin cost me $139. If it stops working, no dealer shop costs to diagnose. Just buy another!
The way the options are packaged is just a money grab. It's a bit like signing up for TV channels. There may be one or two that you would like, but you may need to sign up for a larger package to get them. They are trying to change the regulations for that here in Canada. Maybe Car packages will be next

On a Saab 9-5 Aero we owned, I was able to add the OEM mirror with the home link.
Wonder why you could not do the same? Here is another option but not one I have any experience with yet. http://radar-mirror.com/Homelink.html

I think I like the radar-mirror.com idea best and will check into it. I also found this option http://www.aclickawayremotes.com/Fla...Set/index.html
it use's your high beam switch to operate the garage door.

That is an interesting concept. Always makes me nervous when jump or crimp on an existing wiring harness. Must be from too many years owning & working on British motorcars where if the smoke escaped from the wiring, electrical failure was imminent.

So maybe for GLK too?
Regardless, a Stanley remote in cubby hole or on visor is a lot cheaper and will work!

The built-in one isn't that great anyway. You really have to hold the button down for an extended period to get it to send the signal, rather than just a quick press of any standard garage door opener. It also requires a decent amount of pressure.

I was actually going to post the same thing. We have a liftmaster with a rolling code and it doesn't work very well with the MB built-in opener. You have to hold the button down for 3-4 seconds and even then it only works when I'm within 50 ft of the house. I actually just went back to using the cheapo opener that came with our unit. I can open the door from down the street if I want.

Our E320 has a door opener built into the visor. It works reasonably well with the rolling codes door.
Maybe one off a GLK, or a different model, from a wrecker could be salvaged and a suitable spot found for mounting? I think it would need to be high up because as mentioned above, the MB openers seem to be a bit weak on signal.
Probably not worth the effort.
My openers are kind of rudimentary. I think I will see if I can find one that is more in keeping with the fine interior of the GLK

I think many of the options would be fun to have. At least for a while!
We bought our GLK as a long term retirement vehicle. We spent the extra $$ on extended warranty rather than gizmos. Others may have a 3 or 4 yr lease or are buying with intent to trade when 4yr basic warranty expires. In those circumstances it may be easier to justify the extra $$ a month on your payments knowing that you won't be around when those gizmos give trouble.
At one time, many upscale Benzes were fitted with mobile phones. Several thousand $$ a pop. Those were analogue phones which of course were soon obsolete. Same thing could happen with the Nav and some other packages. I don't want to pay $120/hr for a mechanic to try and troubleshoot electronic gizmos
But to each his own.

The convenience of the mirror mounted (garage) door opener is compromised by the issues mentioned earlier in this post. However, it eliminates the presence of a stand alone remote which could be stolen or misplaced. I will stick with the mirror type.

I have Liftmaster openers with the rolling codes. My built in mirror opener opens the door reliably twice as far away as the individual Liftmaster remote. I've had them for several years now and a couple of cars, and nary a problem. That was one of the 'toys' I just had to have!

I don't have any problems with my mirror-mounted garage door opener. It works well and even from up the street.
I bought my GLK with the intent to keep it for many years. I still got basically every option except the running boards. I don't agree that the options are only good for people who lease or trade cars before the warranty expires. It's an individual call. Get what you want and I'll get what I want.

If this cars.com article is accurate, it seems many glk250 buyers tend to be on the frugal side:
The GLK250 starts at a respectable $39,495 including $905 destination fee, and includes 4Matic all-wheel drive. This brings the GLK250 in well below the starting price of competitors like the Audi Q5 Hybrid, which starts at $51,795, including $895 destination fee. However, start adding things like the premium sound system ($810); Parktronic advanced parking assist ($970); a Premium Package with a panoramic sunroof, auto-dimming mirrors, power liftgate and satellite radio ($3,450); the full leather seating package ($2,100); Comand navigation with rear view camera and voice control ($2,790); a Driver Assistance Package with all kinds of electronic driving aids ($2,950) and more, and you'll quickly arrive at my test vehicle's eye-popping price of $57,635. That's easily the price of a decently optioned ML350 4Matic, a much larger SUV. Mercedes-Benz says that the actual average transaction price for the GLK is about $45,000, so it would seem that not many people are ponying up for the fully loaded versions.
Garmin’s navigation will be fully integrated into Benz’s COMAND infotainment system, which also controls the radio, climate control, and Internet connectivity. According to Garmin, its system will operate much like current Mercedes navigation systems do, either with the COMAND rotary knob or by voice command. The navigation and map visuals will still be displayed on the infotainment screen and secondary commands will still pop up in the instrument panel. Our experiences with Benz’s COMAND system have been mixed. During a comparo that included a C350 sedan, we deemed Benz’s infotainment system as “pretty much OK.” And when we selected the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class as our most recent SUV of the Year, its COMAND system was on the short list of dislikes: “our whole team agreed that COMAND is in serious need of a major rethink.” Hopefully this new deal with Garmin is the start of better days for Benz’s infotainment system.

I use this Hormann garage door opener which fits perfectly in the cigarette lighter socket. I have the door openers on my mirror but they're U.S. frequencies that don't work here in Europe.

This is a Hormann that is sold in UK Presumably wrong frequency for NA.
