Glk250 oil
This is my first post.Hope I am getting it right.I have a 2015 glk250 with 178000 kms on it.I decided to change the oil and filter myself for 5he first time, and avoid the dealer. Not knowing anything about 22951,I used Shell Rotella T5 15W-40 diesel engine oil. This is API CK4, CJ-4 C1-4 C1-4 or CH14.Is this OK or am I hurting the engine, and need to chang the oil again.
thanks

I suggest draining and refilling with an oil from this list that is available in your location:

There are three MB oil specs that are "approved" for the OM651 engine. They are MB 228.51, MB 229.31, and MB 229.51. The only oil I have found here in the US that meets any of those specs (228.51) and also has API CK-4 approval is Chevron Delo 400 XLE, available in 10W-30, 10W-40 and 15W-40. (Some weights may not have MB approval). The issue with using an oil that is not Mercedes approved is potential damage to downstream emissions components, i.e. the DPF and SRC.
[Edit]- Found another, Shell Rotella 550046251 T6 Full Synthetic Multi-Vehicle 5W-30 CK-4 and MB 228.51
There's nothing wrong (IMHO) with using the 15W-40 oil as long as you don't have to start it in temperatures below about 15 degrees F. I can't find any information on the 10W-40 variety.
One thing to consider: the Chevron oil is not a pure synthetic; it is a synthetic blend, so maybe a 5,000 mile oil change interval...

@JohnCC has a GLK250, lives in northern US (cold winters), makes valid points, and has found a suitable oil.
Availability of oils varies by location. We have found Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 readily available a many locations. It is labeled MB Approval 229.31, 229.51 and is on the link I previously sent. We use it in our medium duty diesel trucks (7500 mile changes) and our MB GPF gasoline vehicles (10,000 mile changes).

Goes on sale all the time for 40$
This oil is specifically approved for your vehicle and easiest to get in Canada.

One example: Pennzoil Platinum Euro L in 5w30 at $26 for 5L jug. You'd need a couple more liters for a full change, but you can't beat it for the price. (see here).
Why anyone would use non-spec oil in a complicated Benz diesel is beyond me.
