Anyine else still waiting for a 2020 GLS 450?

Ordered 12/19/19....just curious if anyone else is waiting for their 20. Last I spoke to my dealer, a month ago, I was told it would arrive just before Labor Day. I used to call the dealer weekly, but they have no answers.

Lots of us. You need to find out from your dealer if it’s officially scheduled for production or not. My 580 is finally scheduled for mid December. Some people even have their dealer send them the NETSTAR (dealer ordering tool) screen which should show a status code. Between covid employee impact and Covid supply chain impact, things are moving but slow.
More about others waiting and factory schedule in thread below: https://mbworld.org/forums/gls-class...-schedule.html

Mine was produced in early August but is still in Alabama. I've been told that it is being held up for a rear seat trim piece. Some other 2020 GLS's are being held up for a replacement ignition coil. The parts supply chain seems to be erratic.

At least the good news is that they should be giving you a 2021 model now.

A 2020 that is built - is a 2020... sure you can order a end-Nov 2021 build

I’m still waiting on a 2020 GLS 580 I ordered on 12/17/19. Netstar showed production started (B4 - X2 Prod) and VIN assigned on 6/16/20, but no updates after that. Dealer doesn’t really seem to have any information.

When does the factory switch over to 2021 GLS production? What happens if a VIN has already been assigned, but the factory switches over? Should I keep waiting or just cut my losses and order a 2021? I’m surprised that Mercedes hasn’t been more proactive in providing information to people who have been waiting over 9 months.

if your dealer really doesn’t have info, they need to escalate with MB. I can’t believe they’d just let that sit without update - that’s not good customer service.

GLS 580 Ordered 2-23-20

Hello All - please forgive the double post - I also posted in the other thread (Factory Build Schedule Thread) on this but meant to post on this one.

I ordered a 2020 GLS580 on 2/23/20 and have a "Production Started" event on 7/27/20 (see image below)
Also curiously there was a VIN change event on the same day - wondering if that was triggered by a switchover to a 2021 model...

Anyway - my dealer has been very responsive and apologetic but he tells me he simply can not get a solid commitment as to a date...
On 8/1 he told me that if he had to guess he would bet I would get the car sometime in August.
On 9/11 he told me the vehicle was still showing "in production" and that he had no more info but that he knew there were parts constraints.
He then stated he was "crossing his fingers" the car arrived this month (Sept).

Also notable is that I ordered the car with pretty much every option except for the high end audio system and I am wondering it that has anything to do with the delay.

I am a little torn as to what to do here - I really want this vehicle and I can wait a bit longer but the fact that someone (I believe Cincy?) ordered a 580 in 12/2019 and still does not have the vehicle....does not bode well!

Cheers,

Kurt

Well, I called my dealer after a month of not hearing from them and the latest is that my 2020 450 has finished production and is waiting to be placed on a truck to come to the dealership. But Im now a bit confused because I priced a 2021 configured exactly the same as my 2020 and the sticker price is $2k less (mostly because the stuff I had to option for in the 2020 model are now standard features)! So now I'm torn.... Plus, I'm really not happy about buying (an expensive) new car and by the time I get it, the next year models are essentially out too.

I am one of the posters who has a 12/2019 GLS order. The Netstar screen cap my dealer sent me looks almost the same as yours, B4 -X-2 production status. Essentially the same top three events Production Started, Transmitted to MY, and VIN update, all on 6/16/20. I've pinged the dealer several times since then and no updates or changes to the Netstar status. My 580 is also almost fully optioned except for E-ABC. I assume they started production on it but are missing some part required to complete it. Like CALLA, I can't get real excited about taking delivery on a 2020 at the same time others are receiving 2021 vehicles.

Wow. Thanks for the replies Calla and Benz. As far as my vehicle I did order the E-ABC which of course is even more parts to hang up the supply chain...

Calla have you confirmed that the car you are picking up is indeed a 2020 not a 2021? Benz - have you asked the dealer about this too? I am wondering if this is why there was a "VIN change" in our status updates or if that is just the VIN being changed from no value to being assigned a VIN...I am going to email the dealer right now and let you know what they say regarding 2020 vs 2021. One thing is for sure is that my ordering paperwork is for a 2020 vehicle. Either way: getting one model year older certainly has ramifications for the value going forward - especially since 2020 is the first model year of the new model...

Calla especially in your case it would seem a price negotiation is in order. Then again it is hard to negotiate when the products are apparently this scarce...

Best,

Kurt

Kurt,

I have asked the dealer for several status updates, but the Netstar status hasn’t changed for the past couple of months. I am planning to ask them to follow up with MBUSA this time. I did a lookup on the VIN that was assigned and it shows 2020, but the dealer told me he thought the vehicle was going to be pushed into the 2021 model year. Not sure how that works if a VIN has already been assigned. I’ll let you know when I hear back from the dealer.

Received a response from my dealer. The vehicle is still in the same status. I asked them to follow up with Mercedes to understand what the hold up is and when the vehicle will be ready. They said they think the car will get pushed into MY2021, so I asked them to get some certainty around that as well. I will post again when I have more info.

The problem is Mercedes USA is not setup to give build info to customers. The status updates are meant for dealers only.

Other manufacturers have apps where the customers can follow every step. MBUSA is lacking in so many ways...

If it’s pushed to 2021, then it still should have a date for planning. As I understood it, if a ‘20 build didn’t happen, the order was cancelled and had to be resubmitted?
Maybe the person in this forum that got the wrong car got yours!
My concern for you is it will never get scheduled if they just sit and wait. And I can’t imagine that a June build would still be ‘open’.

I hope your dealer can come up with an answer.

I emailed the dealer and asked regarding the model year and also regarding more details on the hold up and if he could describe the nature of the holdup and when it might be resolved.

His response was this:

The vehicle will be a 2020, they sadly don’t flip them over even when they are held up.
They don’t give the dealers the actual details on what the parts constraints are sadly. I will keep badgering my rep to see what’s going on. The only upside here is that once it exits production it will get here very quickly as its built on US soil.
I really wish I had better news to give, or any news for that matter.

As usual, he responded politely and promptly....and my belief is that he is acting in good faith and most likely is more or less kept in the dark re: production status/timelines.

This is frustrating because I did a lot of research on this vehicle and frankly I was really excited to own it. I had hoped to keep the vehicle for a long time - a good 8-10 years as this helped me justify spending this kind of money. Prior to our family "Navigator" we had a Porsche Cayenne GTS which was a good 8 years old when I sold it.

We quickly learned that we would rather have a solid 8 year old German car than a bran new Lincoln....

Considering the size of the GLS, there really is no German parallel. For my use case, the BMW X7's smaller interior dimensions (vs the GLS) are significant enough to disqualify it as a candidate.

Have a hard time believing there are ANY 20's still yet to be delivered. I would push back for more info, even if your dealer is operating in good faith. Is it a small dealership?

My 2020 GLS 450 is still in Alabama. I have seen the screen at my dealer showing my car along with 5 other 2020s he is waiting for. I don't like having to wait and I really don't like getting a 2020 so late in the model year, but I can't get what I want in a 2021 and am ready to get my new GLS when it arrives. MB won't provide an ETA. He is probably more frustrated than I am.

What is in your 20 that you cant get in a 21? I repriced my 20 on the MB website as a 21 and the MSRP is cheaper than my 20!

I ordered a GLS450 with E-ABC and Exclusive Rear Seat Trim, both of which are only available on the GLS580 for 2021.

It sounds like you might be able to negotiate on price then. A car essentially that was essentially built in July but sitting there for a part deserves some compensation. If it comes after ‘21s start rolling, even more so as it’s already depreciated..

I also have a 2020 GLS on order from a dealer in Kansas City. Our order was originally cancelled in May and we were able to get another build slot for early August. The dealer told us that our vehicle was built but waiting for a backordered part and didn't have any more info than that a couple weeks ago. I just received an email from the dealer stating that they received the backordered part and the factory was finalizing all of the builds they are waiting on. He didn't have an exact delivery day but sounded like they expected it to be on a truck headed our way soon.

Mine has been loaded onto a truck and should arrive at the dealership in the next day or two. I should be able to take delivery later next week, 8 months after placing the order.
