BMW Story: '01 X5 4.4i > M3 @ Roll
Damn right, surprised myself tonight. Just trailing along in my dad's X5...
So finally coming back from the studio (sister's in showbiz) on the 2 (Glendale Freeway) my mom spots a "nice yellow car" a la M3 on our left - its the got an AC Schnitzer matching yellow sticker on its rear quarter windows and a DINAN license plate frame (I believe it had the dinan exhaust). Reaction: "See mom, we've got two of those at the shop right now" "Really? Funny color though." "O RLY OWL? YA RLY?" "Ya, really" she says ... sister in the back chuckles.
On ramp to the 2 the guy pulls from behind and gets in front of me 2 --> 1 lane merge... whatever.
He cuts into the left most lane to be slowed down by a few peeps.. I get on the right with the beast.. just cruising at 60. Spot opens up in front of me due to a merge though the M3 and I are practically lined up.. for the taking right? So I'm thinking "yep, I'm gonna hear tagalog on this one..." but leave it in D and floor it (going 60)... and hell, the guy happens to floor it as well same time! For the first few seconds no one moves... next couple i begin inching...footing... metering ahead! There wasn't traffic in front of me so I'm like . The guy immediately shuts down and gets behind me merging... follows me to the 134E and takes the first exit, but hadn't even tried gunning by my side this time in the wide open freeway. No fingers up, thumb or otherwise, so maybe he knows his place w/ the V8? I don't know.. felt kinda awkward running an M3 this way, maybe he didn't shift right.. you could tell it wasn't a manual as well... but I felt right in the X5 .
I love the 4.4i X5 - I think it's the best SUV decision we ever made (prior to this we had an ML320 Black Opal... hm... ). In fact, if I had to buy a family SUV-awesome-sleek-beast-like-machine... it'd be this style SUV. I'm already placing my bid on it if he wants to let it go (for his dream E55 that is <-- this one's a backpatter)
FACTS:
BLK/BLK X5 4.4i
It's got 102,300+ Miles
Well maintained* (no kidding? I wonder by who...)
+K&N Drop-In
Chipped it somewhat aggressive (all limits removed, etc.)
Threw some 20s on there 5-spoke OEMs
Aluminum running boards
Brembo cross drilled rotors F&R
NEEDS:
Angel Eyes :\.. I'll probably do this while I'm down here.
Anyway, sorry for the long and extended post.. just too. Gotta make a second trip to the grocery store... mom's making the super-organic-gourmet-"sweet style" sauce . Drex you're invited over if you want. BBL.

a quarter mile at a time
if it was an E46 M3, and it was trying it's hardest, it should have won. He may have been in the wrong gear or not expecting the race and the superior TQ in your X5 may have been able to get a jump but then it wouldn't match up with the story.

As earlier said, its no way in hell a 4.4 X5 is able to stay close to a M3 at full steam in any speed.
I have driven both and its absolutly no comparisson, IMO the X5 is an amazing car I would love to own but the M3 would flat out murder it.
The only M3 you would have any hope of keeping up with is the early E30 M3 4 cyl, and even that would take you out.
Either he was playing with you, or it was a 320 with M3 stickers.

No way, jose.
I just drove an '03 4.4 X5. Its a pig. It only felt fast compared to the ML350 loaner I was in last week.
But its a big fat pig. Yeah it might have a lot of power but its heavy. It feels way slower than my CDI.
No way Jose can the X5 beat the M3, of any vintage. Not unless the M3 is sick or driven by a moron that short-shifts at 3000 RPM's.

I dont understand why you would put 2 other lives in danger to race a car you know your not gonna beat. Im not a hater, you want to race thats all up to you but you dont put your mom and sisters life in danger

silver 2002 c32 amg
i recently had a bmw x5 close behind me obviously itching for a race, when i finally got the chance and floored it within a few seconds i had put bus lengths on him ,so considering the m3 is very similar in performance to my c32 this must have either been something else or he messed it up big time
