How do I clean the Mass Airflow Sensor?

HI All,

I've seen blogs that discuss how to clean the MAF for different cars but how do I clean it for 2000 ML320? I already removed the unit and the element with torx screw. Which part should I spray with cleaner? Other blogs talk about wires but I dont see wires in the BOSCH version.

Thanks for your help.

I clean mine every few months (just to be safe-I have an intake on my ML) with an MAF cleaner (the CRC brand in a grey can) available from most automotive supply shops. I've never had any problems with this substance.
I hope this helps; good luck!

can someone post pictures of the procedure.

What is required to be removed, how do you do it, and
show how to actually clean the MAF sensor.

You need to remove the MAF fom the car to clean the unit. It is important to unplug it from the harness before starting to clean it. Once you remove the engine cover, it is very accessible and has an easy to remove clip that holds it in place. Once rmeoved, you can see the small wire and resistor that need to be cleaned with the CRC spray. Spray it about 12-15 times in short bursts and give it time to fully dry before plugging it back in. Then reinstall the engine cover and you're set....

I used the CRC MAF cleaner on my ML. You need a security bit torx to remove the MAF from the housing in order to clean it.

The engine light went off after about 1 mile of driving and hasn't been back since. Car doesn't run sluggish anymore too. I definitely recommend using thhis before paying $100-$250 for a new MAF.

When I cleaned my MAF, I didn't take the sensor off of the MAF housing as I didn't have the security torx sockets. It probably is the better way to clean it, but mine has worked flawelessly since the cleaning.

Cool. If you got it to work without removing it that's great. I originally did it that way but the engine light came back on after a couple days. Checked the error code and it was the MAF again.

Seems that there are some components/sensors that you really can't reach without taking it out of the housing.
